Parents charged in suspected starvation death of 2-month-old

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the 2017 starvation death of her 2-month-old daughter.

Court records say Janet Ringer, 28, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to one count of neglect. Ringer and the baby’s father, William Moss, were charged last year with neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

The Indianapolis Star reported that the Indiana Department of Child Services faced scrutiny after the child’s death, which occurred hours after four child welfare workers visited the infant’s home. At least one of them expressed concern about the child’s well-being but didn’t report it to authorities.

Coroners determined the baby died on Aug. 21, 2017, from malnutrition and dehydration.

Senate backs felony charge if doctors misuse sperm

INDIANAPOLIS — The case of an Indiana fertility doctor using his own sperm to impregnate perhaps dozens of women has led to state legislators voting to make such actions a felony crime.

The Indiana Senate gave final approval Tuesday to a bill allowing felony charges in cases of deception involving human sperm, eggs or embryos.

Some men and women whose mothers were unknowingly impregnated by Dr. Donald Cline in the 1970s and 1980s spoke out for the bill after prosecutors said no state law explicitly prohibited such actions. Cline received a one-year suspended sentence on charges of lying to investigators and surrendered his medical license.

Bill advocates say DNA tests show Cline likely fathered at least 46 children born to his patients.

The bill goes to Gov. Eric Holcomb for consideration.

Woman gets prison for neglect in daughter’s death

ANDERSON — A woman who pleaded guilty to neglect in connection with the death of her 23-month-old daughter has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Kayla Hudson, of Chesterfield, was given her punishment Tuesday in a Madison County court. Hudson earlier pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent causing death and neglect causing serious injury to her 3-year-old son. Hudson cried in court before the sentence was handed down.

Paisley Hudson died in July in a hospital after being brought there by her mother. The coroner said she died from a blow to the head and two lacerations to her liver.

Hudson’s boyfriend, Ryan Ramirez, 29, has been charged with murder in the girl’s death and neglect causing injury to the boy. He’s awaiting trial later this year.

Evansville boy, 16, sentenced to 62 years in man’s slaying

EVANSVILLE — A 16-year-old Evansville boy has been sentenced to 62 years in prison in the death of a man fatally shot outside a convenience store.

Paris Cornell was tried as an adult in 23-year-old Kevin Colon’s July 2018 killing, and a jury convicted him of murder and other charges.

A Vanderburgh County magistrate sentenced Cornell to 52 years Monday on the murder conviction and 10 years for using a firearm to commit a felony.

The Evansville Courier & Press reported Cornell was one of two teenagers charged as adults in Colon’s slaying.

Jahkei Mitchell, 16, was sentenced to three years in February after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit robbery. Prosecutors dropped murder and other charges.

Cornell’s defense attorney, William Gooden, called it “misjustice” that Cornell’s sentence is longer than Mitchell’s.

Police: Goose attacks 2 people in suburban Indianapolis

FISHERS — Suburban Indianapolis police are warning people to give plenty of room to geese after one attacked two people in a parking lot.

The Fishers Police Department said the two people suffered minor injuries Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of the city’s Walmart. Sgt. Tom Weger says one suffered a bite mark on an arm. Weger said the two didn’t intentionally approach the goose, but it attacked them after they entered its vicinity.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said geese are particularly aggressive during breeding and nesting season.
