Boulder County Sheriff Deputy Stuart Edward Holt, who died in 2014, was honored Friday by being officially inducted into the Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial in the Golden area.
Holt suffered a fatal stress-induced heart attack on June 2, 2014, after working overtime in the week prior. Not only had he responded to a structure fire days prior to his death, but while driving home from work, he came across a scene in which a bear ran into a road, prompting a car to brake and the driver behind to swerve. The car plunged into a creek, leading to the death of a 13-year-old girl. Holt was the first on the scene according to his daughter, Samantha Siegel.
Shortly after the fatal crash, Holt started complaining of chest pains to his wife. He died the next day after work.
Siegel, 34, described her dad as a funny, quiet man who loved skiing, hiking, history and movies. Siegel said her favorite memory with her father is when she watched The Titanic for the first time with him. She loved it so much it inspired her to study film in college and later name her son Dawson Edward — his first name being after The Titanic’s main character Jack Dawson, and his middle name being after Holt.
Siegel said she thinks it took some time for her father’s death to be recognized as a line-of-duty death because the parameters of what a line-of-duty death is have changed over time to recognize stress-induced fatalities.
“I think it’s important to realize the sacrifice that this job can have and the life threatening implications it can have,” Siegel said. “It’s not going to an office and sitting there. You could have to tell a family the worst news of their life. You could have to try and unfortunately not be able to save a little girl who got swept into a river.”
Siegel, who now lives in Texas, works for a company that does cardiac testing, something Siegel said could have saved her dad. Holt’s colleagues from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office were the ones to advocate for his induction into the memorial.
“Today Deputy Stuart Holt’s name was added to the Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial recognizing his dedicated service to our community,” Boulder County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Vinnie Montez said. “His legacy of service lives on in all of us who had the honor to serve beside him. We stand with his loved ones in remembrance and respect.”
In addition to the Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial, Holt will also be inducted into the National Law Enforcement Memorial. Siegel and her son Dawson plan to go Washington D.C. next week for the ceremony — a city Siegel said her father always wanted to visit.
“I really wanted [Dawson] to know who his grandfather is and the sacrifice he made. He’s going to give a presentation at school when we get back to his class. It’s just so meaningful to have a way to talk about him again that’s currently happening, rather than just trying to hold onto the memories.”
The Colorado Law Enforcement Memorial is at 15055 S. Golden Road.
