USC just couldn’t keep up with No. 20-ranked Maryland, falling to the Terrapins 88-71 in a Big Ten Conference men’s basketball Thursday night in College Park, Md.
Rodney Rice scored 22 points, Ja’Kobi Gillespie added 20 as Maryland (21-6, 11-5) won for the eighth time in nine games — and 13th straight at home.
Wesley Yates III scored 21 for USC (14-12, 6-9), which has lost four of five.
Derik Queen added 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Terps, who never trailed, opening each half with a flourish and keeping USC at bay.
Maryland scored the game’s first 11 points and led 18-5 after a dunk by Jordan Geronimo. It was 37-27 at the half. The Terps began the second half with a 15-5 run to double their advantage to 20.
Clark Slajchert came off the bench to make three 3-pointers for the Trojans in the second half. USC cut the lead to six but got no closer.

NO. 1 NOTRE DAME 82, MIAMI 42: Sonia Citron scored 19 points, Hannah Hidalgo added 18 for the Fighting Irish (24-2, 15-0 ACC) on Thursday night in Coral Gables, Fla.
NO. 6 SOUTH CAROLINA 95, ARKANSAS 55: Joyce Edwards scored 18 points and MiLaysia Fulwiley had 10 of her 15 points in a second-quarter run for the host Gamecocks. Chloe Kitts added 10 points and 13 rebounds for South Carolina (23-3, 12-1 Southeastern Conference), which who had their 71-game game home win streak snapped by UConn on Sunday.
NO. 7 LSU 79, GEORGIA 63: Flau’Jae Johnson made a trio of 3-pointers — one from nearly 40 feet away — en route to 21 points for the host Tigers (26-2, 11-2 SEC), who played without All-America power forward Aneesah Morrow. Morrow, who has averaged 18.1 points and 14.4 rebounds this season, sat out after having her foot stepped on in Sunday’s loss at Texas.
INDIANA 71, NO. 8 OHIO STATE 61: Yarden Garzon had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Sydney Parrish and Shay Ciezki also scored 16 points each, and the Hoosiers (17-9, 9-6 Big Ten) made nine 3-pointers in the upset in Bloomington, Ind.
NO. 9 NORTH CAROLINA 68, SYRACUSE 58: Maria Gakdeng had 21 points and 14 rebounds as Tar Heels (24-4, 12-3 ACC) won on the road despite missing Alyssa Ustby, the team’s second-leading scorer and top rebounder, who was injured in Sunday’s game.
LOUISVILLE 70, NO. 11 DUKE 62: Former IE Varsity player of the year Jayda Curry scored a season-high 24 points leading the upset at Durham, N.C. Curry, a Centennial High grad, made all nine of her free throws, including six in the final quarter when Louisville (19-7, 12-3) made 16 of 17 at the line on its way to a fourth straight win and a third-place tie in the ACC with North Carolina.
NO. 13 NC STATE 83, NO. 20 GEORGIA TECH 68: Aziaha James and Zoe Brooks scored 17 points apiece for the Wolfpack (21-5, 13-2 ACC) at Atlanta. Tonie Morgan scored 17 points and Dani Carnegie added 16 for Georgia Tech (21-6, 9-6).
NO. 14 KENTUCKY 73, MISSOURI 65: Clara Strack had 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Georgia Amoore scored eight of her 19 in the third quarter for the Wildcats (21-4, 10-3 SEC) at Columbia, Mo. Laniah Randle had 21 points and 13 rebounds for Missouri (13-15, 2-11).
NO. 15 TENNESSEE 88, NO. 18 ALABAMA 80: Jewel Spear scored 11 of her 20 points at the free-throw line, Talaysia Cooper added 16 points and the Volunteers (20-6, 7-6 SEC). No. 15 Tennessee beat No. 18 Alabama 88-80 on Thursday night for its fifth win in six games. Sarah Ashlee Barker had 22 points, six rebounds and five assists for Alabama (21-6, 8-5).
NO. 16 OKLAHOMA 101, VANDERBILT 81: Raegan Beers scored a career-high 30 points — making 11 of 13 shots from the field — and had 14 rebounds for the host Sooners (20-6, 8-5 Big 12). Freshman sensation Mikayla Blakes followed back-to-back 50-point games with 42 points for Vanderbilt (19-8, 6-7).
NO. 21 MARYLAND 85, NORTHWESTERN 79: Kaylene Smikle scored 23 points and Saylor Poffenbarger had 16 points for the Terrapins (21-6, 11-5) at Evanston, Ill. Caileigh Walsh had 15 points for Northwestern (9-16, 2-12).
