LITTLETON >> Monarch’s girls basketball season came to an end Saturday afternoon at Columbine High School.
Despite the 76-58 loss to the No. 13-seeded Columbine Rebels, there were defintely some bright signs for the future, namely Monarch sophomore Sienna Williams. The 6-foot-3 power forward poured in a career-high 33 points to give the 20th-seeded Coyotes a shot at the upset bid.
“She (Williams) is a great player. She really got going in the end there,” Columbine coach Keegan Bell said of Williams scoring her career high. “Any time we seemed to be able to take a bigger lead, she would make a play. She is one heck of a player.”
Columbine (18-6) got off to a hot start by taking a 13-0 lead in the opening minutes of the wire-to-wire victory. However, Williams kept Monarch (15-9) from getting blown out.
The sophomore had a pair of 3-pointers, 10 other field goals and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Still, Williams was a little hard on herself after the season-ending loss.
“I’ve got to come out stronger in the first half,” Williams said. “That is kind of my goal for next year. Right now I’ll focus on club (basketball) and we’ll see what is next.”
Monarch freshman guard Charlotte Weiss had a solid game for the Coyotes. Weiss made five 3-pointers, finishing with 16 points. Sophomore Ginger Milot had a pair of 3-pointers in finishing with eight points for Monarch. “Kincaid (Monarch coach Kincaid Bimler) does a great job,” Bell said. “They have a young team and they are in good hands. I think he did a tremendous job with his team this year.”
Bimler — a former girls basketball coach at Chatfield — guided the Coyotes to a 15-win season in his first year at the helm. He will have plenty to build on next year with the graduation of just one senior. Savannah Weiss unfortunately missed her entire senior season on the court for Monarch after a tore ACL before the start of the season.
“We are young and we are coming back next year,” Williams said.
Columbine will face the winner of No. 36 Rangeview and No. 4 Cherry Creek on Wednesday.
The Rebels offense has been clicking during their current four-game winning streak.
Juniors Taylor Speir (24 points), Jordyn Washington (20 points) and Mason Abraham (18 points) led Columbine’s high-powered offense in the win against Monarch.
