The Woodland Police Department conducted a traffic stop earlier this week that resulted in the arrest of a 20-year-old Woodland resident.

The resident is identified as Pablo Melendrez-Lopez and officers discovered an unregistered firearm in the vehicle during the stop Monday, Jan. 13.

Later that week, on Jan. 14, Woodland Police officers responded to an area near North and East Streets where a person was threatened with a firearm.

According to a WPD Facebook post, within minutes officers found a person matching the description nearby. The suspect, 19-year-old Javier Gonzales of Woodland, ran from officers but was safely taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit. He was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm, which was not registered. Gonzales was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, a variety of firearms charges, and a local warrant for his arrest.

“This is the second gun arrest of this week and just one example of how our officers utilize de-escalation techniques to bring a safe resolution to potentially volatile situations in our community,” according to the WPD Facebook post.
