Santa Cruz’s Maddie Storrer tied for third place on Sunday at the World Surf League’s SLO CAL Open at Morro Bay, a 1,000-point Qualifying Series event.

Storrer, who entered the event ranked No. 49 on the 2022/2023 North America Women’s QS rankings, lost to No. 25 Sanoa Dempfle-Olin of Canada in the semifinals, 13.34-9.84.

Dempfle-Olin’s sister, Mathea, ranked No. 17, prevailed in the all-Canadian final, 14.17-13.17.

It was the first time both Storrer and Sanoa have reached the semifinals in a QS event. Storrer’s previous best finish came at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic on Nov. 15-19 at Steamer Lane, where she tied for fifth place.

In the men’s final, Taj Lindblad of San Clemente prevailed over Nolan Rapoza of Long Beach, 15.34-14.53.

Running

Surfer’s Path 10k/5k >> Santa Cruz’s Tobias Andersson and Los Gatos’ Jillian Wesselman produced wins in the 10k race, and Santa Cruz’s Alex Kasman and Soquel’s Marissa Garcia earned wins in the 5k race at the Surfer’s Path 10k/5k in Santa Cruz on Sunday.

Andersson (34:24) took first out of 531 runners in the 10k. Santa Cruz’s Stefano Profumo (34:59) took second, and Burlingame’s Terence Byrnes (35:13) was third.

Wesselman, the top female, finished in 36:28. Santa Cruz’s Simone Angela Winkler (39:09) took second, and Monterey’s Kelsey Alves (39:33) was third.

Kasman (17:28) took first out of 320 entrants in the 5k. Aptos’ Jeff Soares (18:02) took second, and Santa Cruz’s Kevan Chu (18:06) was third.

Garcia, 14, the top female, won in 21:27. Soquel’s Sara Doinidis (21:58) took second, and Durham’s Ashley Blawas (23:36) took third.

NBA G League

Salt Lake City 119, at Santa Cruz 112 >> Guard Lester Quinones led the Sea Dubs with a season-high 42 points, but the Warriors saw their four-game win streak come to an end at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Saturday night.

Quinones finished 15-of-29 shooting from the field. He also had eight rebounds and four assists.

Forward Jordan Schakel scored 20 points for Santa Cruz (11-10), and guard Jerome Robinson had 17 points and six rebounds.

Jayce Johnson had 16 rebounds, but it was the Stars who held a 52-48 advantage on the boards.

Christian Vital scored 24 points for the Stars (13-9). Micah Potter had 17 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

Santa Cruz hosts Cleveland (13-9) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
