Lakeshore Legal Aid, a nonprofit organization that provides a myriad of legal services in metro Detroit, has received a $200,000 grant for its effort to help people receive property tax relief.

The TD Charitable Foundation, an arm of TD Bank, awarded the funds in April to Lakeshore’s Property Tax Foreclosure Prevention Project as part of its Housing for Everyone program, a distribution of $7.2 million to 36 nonprofits throughout the eastern United States.

The grant will bolster Lakeshore’s effort to help homeowners to receive tax exemptions, resolve title issues, and contest improper assessment and foreclosures at no cost to the homeowner, officials said.

Lakeshore Legal Aid, which was the only organization in Michigan to receive funds, provides no-cost legal services to low-income people, older adults and survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault.

“Amid rising housing costs, these organizations play a vital role in supporting homeowners in communities across TD’s footprint to afford critical repairs, avoid foreclosure, correct tangled titles, and so much more,” said Paige Carlson-Heim, director of the TD Foundation. “Homeownership opens doors. It creates a path to generational wealth and long-term financial stability for families and individuals. So, we were intentional this year about selecting organizations, like Lakeshore Legal Aid, that support homeowners to mitigate the threat of home loss before they reach the point of crisis.

TD has awarded more than $63 million to 620 affordable housing initiatives since its Housing Everyone grant program began in 2005.

Lakeshore Legal Aid services clients at offices in Mount Clemens, Pontiac, Taylor, Detroit (two), Dearborn and Port Huron, and operates administrative offices in Warren.
