If it’s too good to be true, it probably is

Scammers are impersonating well-known companies and calling people with promises of discounted services — but only if you pay using a gift card. This is a scam, and it’s important to know the signs so you can protect yourself.

• Take your time. Scammers try to create a sense of urgency so you don’t stop to question the offer. You’re never obligated to respond right away. Pause and think it through.

• Verify the offer. If the deal sounds interesting, call the company directly using a trusted phone number — like the one on your bill or their official website — not the number given during the call.

• Be cautious with gift cards. Gift cards should only be used for gifts — not for making payments. If someone insists you use a gift card to pay for a service, it’s almost certainly a scam.

Be sure to report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
