December’s spectacularly sunny opening days delivered 85% of possible sunshine, the city’s sunniest December open since 1942, took a hit this weekend as a dreary overcast settled over the city. The cloudy weekend dropped the month’s sunshine to 63%, still well above the month’s 41% normal. The cloudy, chilly weather also brought the city the month’s first precipitation Sunday, as light rain and snow showers dampened the city. Sunshine should return in earnest by Tuesday, as an influx of mild, Pacific air floods into the city, boosting temperatures into the lower and middle 50s, nearly 20 degrees above normal. The recent dry period should end abruptly by this weekend as a developing storm is forecast to bring its first significant rain since late November, and that rain could change to snow Saturday night.
