Wayne Wolsey was born in Battle Creek, MI, to Henry and Frieda Wolsey. Wayne received his Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University and Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry at Kansas University. After three years as an industrial chemist, he joined the Macalester College faculty in 1965. Dr. Wolsey was an icon of chemical education locally, nationally, and internationally.
Among his publications is the universal college text Chemical Principles in the Laboratory.
He served in leadership roles with the American Chemical Society (ACS), Minnesota Academy of Science (MAS), including the annual MAS high school Science Bowl at Macalester.
Wayne received numerous awards including the MN Academy of Science Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, the Award for Distinguished Service from the MAS, the MN College Science Teacher of the Year award, the Macalester College Thomas Jefferson award, and was designated as a MegaMole contributor to MN Chemistry Education. He was active with the AAUP and honored with the Robert E. Sloan Award for his support of academic freedom and the Robert Brasted Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Teaching. The MN Section of the ACS honored him with the 2010 Senior Chemists Award for outstanding service to science and society. Wayne was also active with Hamline Church United Methodist, the St. Paul Council of Churches/Interfaith Action, Boy Scouts of America, and the Bone Lake Association. Wayne is remembered fondly for his office “piling-system”; punny jokes; and his advocacy for fairness and due process, empowering girls and women in math and science, and environmentalism - including advocacy for recycling, lakefront buffer zones, and nuclear energy. Family surrounded Wayne on his last day, and he was well cared for by the staff of The Arbor at Timber Hills (IGH) and the Health Partners Hospice Team. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Wolsey, Ph.D.; brother Leslie (Patricia) Wolsey; and sister Margaret Westbrook. Survived by his children Rev. Roger Wolsey and Carole (Todd) Pankow; grandchildren Kendra (Bill) Richter, Evan Pankow (Breanna Churchill), Andrew Wolsey and his mother Shandra Newcom; greatgrandson Lachlan Richter; cousins, nieces and nephews; and numerous former students. Memorial service 11AM, Saturday, January 18 at Hamline Church United Methodist in Saint Paul. Instead of flowers, donations to Hamline Church, the MN Academy of Science, and/or blood to blood banks are welcome.
