DETROIT >> The Tigers are becoming the darlings of national TV.
ESPN announced Thursday that the Tigers have been picked up for another “Sunday Night Baseball” broadcast, this one on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 3.
The game against the Phillies, run by former Tigers president Dave Dombrowski and starring former Tiger Nick Castellanos, will mark Detroit’s third appearance on SNB this season.
In the first, the Tigers beat the Twins, 3-0, at Comerica Park on June 29, behind seven one-hit innings from reigning Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, who had 13 strikeouts.
That was SNB’s first trip to Detroit since 2017.
The second will be this Sunday, on the road against the Texas Rangers, with Skubal set to start again for Detroit.
The Tigers are 2-0 on SNB the last two seasons, including a 3-2 walk-off win over the New York Yankees on Aug. 18, 2024, in the Little League Classic game in Williamsport, Pa.
The Tigers entered the All- Star break with the best record in baseball, at 59-38, and have an 11.5-game lead in the American League Central, though they are on a four-game losing streak — their first of the season.
Still, most sportsbooks still have Detroit as the favorite to win the AL and second-favorite to win the World Series.
The Tigers open the second half of the season with three games in Texas from Friday-Sunday, followed by three games at Pittsburgh from Monday-Wednesday.
They return home July 24 for four games against the Toronto Blue Jays, then have three at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks leading into the trade deadline.
This is expected to be the last year of “Sunday Night Baseball” on ESPN, as the network and Major League Baseball are scheduled to end their partnership after 36 years following the 2025 season.
