Vinícius Júnior scored a goal and assisted on another in Real Madrid’s 3-0 win over Salzburg on Thursday night that secured the Spanish powerhouse first place in the Club World Cup’s Group H and a spot in the round of 16.
Vinícius gave the 64,811 soaking wet fans at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia something to cheer for by scoring on a left-footed shot right outside the penalty box in the 40th minute. Jude Bellingham left Vinícius in position to score with a breakaway pass that took advantage of the wet field conditions caused by the rain.
Eight minutes later, a deflected pass by Mamady Diambou left Vinícius one-on-one against Joane Gadou inside Salzburg’s penalty box. Having no angle to shoot, Vinícius delivered a backheel pass to Federico Valverde that left the Uruguayan wide open to score from 10 yards out.
Gonzalo García put the game to bed with a goal in the 84th minute.
Al Hilal 2, Pachuca 0: Salem Aldawsari scored in the 22nd minute and Al Hilal won Thursday in Nashville to clinch a berth in the round of 16. Marcus Leonardo also scored for Al Hilal, the only team outside Europe and the Americas to advance out of group play.

After scoring only five goals in 37 matches for LAFC, Giroud will become a free agent after his departure. He is widely expected to join Lille, which finished fifth in the French league last season, on a free transfer.

He was promoted to president in 2016 and surrendered his responsibilities as GM in 2017, when Bobby Webster took over.
The 54-year-old Ujiri, who was heading into the final year of his contract, led the Raptors to their only NBA title in 2019.

Sam Bennett, who led the NHL with 15 goals in this year’s playoffs and became the first Panthers player ever to score that many in a single postseason — is staying with the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions. He and Florida agreed to a new eight-year contract worth $64 million, or $8 million per season.
Bennett was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as MVP of the playoffs, the first Florida player to ever win that award.
John Tavares is staying with the Toronto Maple Leafs for four more years at a significantly discounted price. Tavares re-signed for $17.55 million, and he’ll count $4.39 million against the salary cap through the 2028-29 season on a very team-friendly contract. He was making $11 million annually on his previous deal and was a point-a-game player last season at age 34.

GOLF
Jake Knapp shot an 11-under 61 to break a Rocket Classic record that stood for less than a day, becoming the first PGA Tour player to break 60 and shoot a 61 or lower in the same season.
Knapp started the second round 130th in the 156-player field after opening with a 72. He surged into contention with nine birdies and an eagle in a bogey-free round.
Knapp, ranked No. 99 in the world, is the only player on the tour to shoot 61 or better in two rounds this season.
He shot a 59 — one off the tour scoring record of 58 set by Jim Furyk in 2016 — at the Cognizant Classic four months ago, when he broke the tournament scoring record before cooling off and finishing tied for sixth.
Knapp broke the 18-hole record at Detroit Golf Club that was set Thursday in the first round when Aldrich Potgieter and Kevin Roy both shot a 62.
Patrick Reed and Harold Varner III each shot 5-under 67 at Maridoe Golf Club to share the first-round lead in LIV Golf Dallas.

Jon Rahm was a stroke back. Abraham Ancer shot 69, and Dustin Johnson was at 70 with Graeme McDowell, Anirban Lahiri, Richard Bland and David Puig.
Bryson DeChambeau opened with a 72. He lives in Dallas and played his college golf at SMU.

Brooks Koepka withdrew during the round because of illness. He smashed a tee marker with his driver on the ninth hole.
Jennifer Kupcho and Leona Maguire shot a 10-under 60 in better-ball play to take the second-round lead in the Dow Championship, the LPGA Tour’s only team event.
The Solheim Cup rivals had a 13-under 127 total at Midland Country Club after opening with an alternate-shot 67 on Thursday.
They had a one-stroke lead over Cassie Porter and Gemma Dryburgh, the first-round leaders who parred the final six holes in a 62.
RUNNING
Three-time Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon failed in her bid to become the first woman to run a mile in under four minutes. Kipyegon, the Olympic 1,500-meter gold medalist from Kenya, ran in 4 minutes, 6.42 seconds — the fastest mile in history by a woman — at Stade Charléty in Paris.
Her time was better than her world record of 4:07.64 but won’t be recognized by the international federation because the Nike-sponsored event was unofficial.
