Inland Valley Repertory Theatre will present Disney’s “Newsies” July 19-Aug. 3 in Morgan Auditorium on the campus of the University of La Verne, 1950 Third St.
“Newsies,” with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman and book by Harvey Fierstein, is based on the 1992 Disney musical film and inspired by the real-life newsboys’ strike of 1899. The show features songs including “Carrying the Banner,” “King of New York” and “Seize the Day.”
Frank Minano, one of the founders of Inland Valley Repertory Theatre, directs the production, with choreography by Christina Harding, music direction by Ronda Rubio, costumes by Mark Gamez and wig and hair design by Kirklyn Robinson.
The cast of 32 local performers includes Arianna Nelson as Katherine Plumber, with Patrick McMahon, Michael Gallo, Aaron Byrnes, Cameron Kaeni and Chelsea Johnson in supporting roles.
Making his Inland Valley Repertory Theatre debut, Jay Kanabay, on break from Ithaca College, is leading the cast in the role of Jack Kelly, according to a news release.
Performances are 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $50-$60 for adults and $40 for children, available at ivrt.org or by calling 909-859-4878.
Running in repertory with “Newsies” is Inland Valley Repertory Theatre’s annual Scriptfest, featuring two productions in a readers’ theater format. This summer’s productions are Ken Ludwig’s “Dear Jack, Dear Louise” July 25 and David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “Glengarry Glen Ross” Aug. 1. Scriptfest tickets are $20, also available at 909-859-4878 and ivrt.org.
