Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris was placed on the team’s non-football injury list Thursday, missing the start of training camp because of a eye injury suffered during a July 5 fireworks accident in his hometown of Antioch.
Coach Jim Harbaugh said Thursday, when Chargers camp began, that Harris, 27, had joined the team in El Segundo and was participating in meetings. It is unclear, though, when Harris will be able to begin to practice.
Harris is on the active NFI list, meaning he can begin practicing when he is ready.
“It’s great to have him,” Harbaugh said. “A lot of gratitude that he’s here. Gosh, I’m the age of being a parent — I’ve got kids that are these guys’ age. So, just the feeling of having everybody back under the same roof is a good feeling.”
Stanford doctors who had been treating Harris had been in contact with the Chargers’ medical staff, but it was too soon to determine how long one of the team’s prized offseason free-agent acquisitions might be sidelined.
Harris signed a one-season, $9.25 million contract with the Chargers in March after rushing for 1,000 yards or more in each of his four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was one of the nation’s top high school recruits while at Antioch High before playing collegiately at Alabama.
The Chargers expected to know more about Harris’ condition and prognosis after their doctors examined him.
“We’ll get more clarity when he gets in to (be examined by) our doctors,” Chargers GM Joe Hortiz said. Everything that has been relayed to us has been positive.”
The mishap happened about 12:20 a.m. July 5 in Antioch, and injured more than one person. Antioch police said some of the injured were treated at the scene and hospitalized. Others drove themselves to a hospital, police said.
Harris played his first four seasons with the Steelers after he was drafted 24th overall in 2021. He had 4,312 rushing yards and 1,149 passing yards and scored 34 TDs as a Steeler.
