Fairview junior Toray Davis somehow stayed inbounds, tip-toeing the narrowest of edges along the sideline to haul in both of his touchdown receptions Friday night.
Davis’ tightrope performance helped the Knights avoid another fall in the postseason, where they hadn’t won since 2019, including the past two seasons at home. He found just enough room to stay inbounds on both his first-half scores, sending a chilled Christian Recht Field crowd into a frenzy while giving No. 7 Fairview a big, early lead in its 42-15 win over No. 10 Chatfield.
Sophomore quarterback Ki Ellison sandwiched his own TD run around them and finished with three passing touchdowns. His third of the night was a 43-yarder to Jordan Rechel, who gave the Chargers’ secondary more fits, scribbling untouched to put the Knights back up three touchdowns late in the third quarter. Rechel’s 82nd career score was a 10-yard rush that sealed things early in the fourth.
The 27-point win came against the team that bounced Fairview at home in 5A’s first round two years ago. Rechel hadn’t forgotten.
“Revenge is the best motive that you can have,” Rechel said. “As soon as I saw those white jerseys out there, I had flashbacks. I knew we had to get them.”
Fairview (11-0) scored on three of its first four possessions to take a 21-0 lead. Ellison needed just a small window to connect with the 6-foot-1 Davis on a 10-yard TD in the back corner of the endzone for the game’s first score. On the 86-yard hookup in the second, Davis not only caught the streak pressed up against Chatfield’s sideline, he was able to halt his momentum to stay inbounds before racing the rest of the way into the end zone.
“Eyes on the ball and nothing else,” said Davis, a touted prospect who has an offer from Coach Prime and the CU Buffs. “Then just had to make a move and race to the touchdown.”
Rechel sealed things with two more scores after the break. Brock Kolstad added another TD run in the closing minutes.
Fairview will travel to No. 2 Mountain Vista (11-0) in the quarterfinals next week. The Golden Eagles are led by the state’s passing leader, Austyn Modrzewski, who threw for 50 TDs in the regular season.
