Brooke Younkin drove in the only run she would need, hitting a groundout in the first inning as the Novato High softball team held on for a 1-0 win against Tam on Monday.

Gabrielle Winnett led off the game a walk, stole second and then took third on a passed ball. Younkin grounded out to second to spot herself a 1-0 lead.

Younkin threw a complete game, limiting Tam to five hits while striking out five over seven innings. Younkin also had one of two hits for Novato (12-11, 4-9 MCAL) on the day.

Ava Lee also went the distance for Tam (8-10, 6-7), allowing the two hits and one unearned run while striking out two.

• The top of Marin Catholic’s order was devastating, combining for 10 hits, eight RBIs and 10 runs scored in a 14-2 win against Archie Williams (5-17, 5-8). Sammy Horn had four hits, an RBI and scored three times for MC (13-5, 9-4). Lindsay Harrison had three hits, three RBIs and scored four runs. Lauren Osheroff hit a homer and doubled twice to the tune of four RBIs and three runs scored.

• San Marin moved into sole possession of fourth place following an 11-0 win against Terra Linda. The Mustangs (8-10, 7-6) sit one game ahead of Tam with one game to play. San Marin closes with first-place Redwood on Wednesday while Tam faces San Rafael. A play-in game for the final MCAL playoff spot would be held on Friday, if necessary.

Boys golf

Marin Academy capped an unbeaten regular season with a Bay Counties League West title after shooting a 321 at Peacock Gap on Monday.

The Wildcats were 38 strokes better than second-place University (359). MA qualifies automatically for the North Coast Section Division II championship next Monday at Rooster Run Golf club in Petaluma.

Charlie Wilhelm shot a 74 to take medalist honors for MA. Charlie Hansen carded a 78 and Drayson Jaffee shot an 84. San Domenico’s Henri Huffer (89) moves on to the NCS qualifiers an an individual.

Boys swimming

Tristan Lu and Schuyler Rewick turned in strong performances in the freestyle sprints to help Marin Academy claim the title at the Bay Counties League West champions on Saturday.

Lu won the 50 free in 22.31 seconds followed by Rewick in second (22.64). The duo took second and third, respectively, in the 100 free with teammate Tucker Byrne close behind them in fourth.

MA scored 135 points, easily outpointing second-place University (83 points).

The Wildcats also had winning teams in the 200 free relay (Rewick, Ewan Smith, Byrne and Lu) and the 400 free relay (Rewick, Ewan Smith, Jeremy Tachiki and Lu).

Girls swimming

Gabby Reichley, Ali Kosmowski and Katherine Wu were among the standouts as Marin Academy won the team title at the Bay Counties League swimming championships on Saturday.

Reichley took second in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.71 seconds, took third in the 200 free and competed on the winning 200 free relay team and the second-place 400 free relay team. Reichley, Ali Kosmowski, Wu, and Anja Kosmowski made up the 200 free relay team.

MA won the meet with 129 points, well ahead of second-place San Domenico (64 points).

Ali Kosmowski also placed second in the 200 free. Anna Dixon, Sophia Cestar, Audrey Chiang and Lauren Reagan all accounted for double-digit points to help the Wildcats claim victory.

Mountain biking

A pair of riders who grew up in Kentfield shared the podium twice this past weekend at the 2023 Pan American cross-country mountain bike championships in Brazil.

Former Branson School standout Kate Courtney won a pair of races — the the Women’s Elite Cross Country Olympic and Cross Country Short Circuit races — while Kelsey Urban finished second and third, respectively.

The points earned in Brazil count towards qualifying for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Courtney took first in the XCO race with a time of 1 hour, 27 minutes, and 02.796 seconds to earn 150 points. Urban earned 120 points with her second-place time of 1:27:23.716.

College baseball

San Rafael’s Dylan Joyce, a former Marin Catholic High standout, was presented with the University of Puget Sound’s Ben Cheney Award on Monday. The award is given to the school’s most outstanding male athlete.

Joyce set several career records for the Loggers this past spring, including home runs (36) and runs batted in (134). Joyce also has the school record for most career saves (15).

Joyce batted .398 this season with 51 hits, 14 home runs, 47 RBIs and 32 runs scored. His 2023 campaign was highlighted by a three-homer, eight-RBI performance in a 16-7 win over Linfield on March 5.

Joyce was an All-MCAL first-team selection for MC in both 2018 and 2019.

College basketball

Former Marin Catholic High standout Kyle Winters announced via Twitter on Monday that he has committed to continue his playing career at Siena College.

Winters, who was an All-MCAL first team selection after his senior season in 2022, has been playing for New Hampton School in New Hampshire since graduating from MC.
