In his first-ever taste of international competition, Logan Webb needed just 52 pitches to complete four innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts as the U.S. started pool play with a 15-5 victory over Brazil on Friday evening in Houston.

Brazil shocked Webb to begin the evening when Lucas Ramirez, the son of 12-time All-Star Manny Ramirez, homered on Webb’s second pitch of the night. Webb retired the next 12 batters before handing the ball off to the United States’ bullpen.

While Webb pitched well and the Americans dominated, the night’s most memorable moments belonged to Brazil.

Ramirez followed up his homer off Webb with a towering solo shot off Gabe Speier, ex-Giant Chris Speier’s nephew, in the bottom of the eighth, while 17-year-old right-hander Joseph Contreras, the son of former major-leaguer Jose Contreras, shattered three-time MVP Aaron Judge’s bat to induce an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.

Webb’s next and final appearance of the tournament, assuming the U.S. advances as expected, will be in the quarterfinals on either March 13 or 14. It will be an abnormally long gap between starts for Webb, who typically enjoys the luxury of a regimented schedule leading up to Opening Day.

The right-hander is one of several Giants participating in this year’s tournament.

On Friday, second baseman Luis Arraez had a hit, a run scored and two RBIs in Venezuela’s 6-2 win over the Netherlands, while left fielder Heliot Ramos had a sacrifice fly as Puerto Rico cruised to a 5-0 win over Colombia. On the mound, right-hander Tristan Beck allowed a go-ahead three-run home run to Mexico’s Jonathan Aranda as Great Britain lost 8-2.

Giants win a pair, improve to 12-2

Outfielder Will Brennan continued his hot spring with two hits, two runs and a pair of RBIs in the Giants’ 7-4 win over the Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

Brennan, who is now batting .471, had a run-scoring double in a two-run fifth that gave the Giants a 5-2 lead.

Catcher Jesus Rodriguez, acquired from the Yankees in the Camilo Doval trade last year, had three hits and two RBIs.

In their split-squad game at home in Scottsdale, the Giants edged the Rangers 7-5 on the strength of Osleivis Basabe’s two-run, eighth-inning double that put San Francisco ahead.

Outfielder Jerar Encarnacion went 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs while shortstop Willy Adames had a pair of RBIs.

The Rangers took the lead when ex-A’s fan favorite Mark Canha belted a three-run home run in the seventh off Trenton Harris to make it 5-4.
