Rolling Hills Estates will be alive with the sound of hundreds of walkers and runners for the annual “The Hills are Alive” 5K/10K walk and run this Saturday.
The race started more than 40 years ago and is one of two fundraisers for the city’s Pepper Tree Foundation, which was founded in 1982 and is “dedicated to enhancing our parks, trails and open spaces,” RHE Mayor Velveth Schmitz said in a statement.
“The Hills are Alive race is a treasured Rolling Hills Estates tradition,” she added, “offering runners and walkers a unique opportunity to experience the city through our scenic, soft-packed bridle trails.”
The race, which will start and finish at Ernie Howlett Park, 25851 Hawthorne Blvd., will begin at 8 a.m.
There were 230 participants last year, Assistant City Manager Alexa Davis said.
Last year, chip timing, an electronic device attached to the runner to determine their time, was added to the race, Davis said.First place winners, for both men and women, will receive trophies.
No strollers or dogs are allowed on the course.
Those who have registered for the race prior to this Friday, can pick up their ran packets at City Hall, 4045 Palos Verdes Drive North, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday. Runners who register on Friday or Saturday will need to pick up packets at Howlett Park on the day of the race.
