Man City rallies past Man U in derby
Phil Foden led Manchester City’s fightback after an astonishing miss by Erling Haaland for a 3-1 win over Manchester United in a one-sided derby at Etihad Stadium that exposed the gulf between the two Premier League rivals on Sunday. City trailed 1-0 at halftime after Marcus Rashford’s rasping long-range strike in the eighth minute and a glaring miss from the prolific Haaland from barely two meters out. Foden, above, succeeded where Haaland earlier failed, smashing in a rising drive for the equalizer in the 56th and then sweeping in a low shot in the 80th minute off Julian Alvarez’s inside pass. There was still time for Haaland to atone for his miss by taking advantage of a defensive error to stroke home the third goal in stoppage time with City’s 27th shot of the match. Haaland collapsed to the ground in mock relief following his goal — a league-high 18th of the campaign — after celebrating with Foden. Second-place City moved back a point behind Liverpool with 11 games to go in a title race that looks like going to the wire.
No. 1 South Carolina perfect again
Kamilla Cardoso had 18 points and 14 rebounds, Te-Hina Paopao scored 14 points and No. 1 South Carolina completed its second straight perfect regular season with a 76-68 home victory over Tennessee on Sunday. Cardoso and Paopao, both seniors, excelled on Senior Day as the Gamecocks (29-0, 16-0 Southeastern Conference) won their 47th straight regular-season SEC game, their 57th straight at home and their sixth in a row over the Lady Vols (17-11, 10-6). A perfect season wasn’t talked about among the team when the season began, Paopao said, only a mindset to win each time players took the floor. “It wasn’t really a goal,” said Paopao, a transfer from Oregon. “It was just, ‘We got to win the next game and game after that.’ ” Cardoso, above, played in front of her mother, Janete Soares, and older sister, Jessica Silva, after they arrived from Brazil. Coach Dawn Staley facilitated their arrival, with help from U.S. Rep. James Clyburn in getting visas approved. Cardoso finished with her 13th double-double this season and 29th of her career.
Verstappen’s dad: Horner needs to go
The Red Bull Formula One team will “explode” if Christian Horner stays on as team principal, according to Jos Verstappen, the father of three-time F1 champion Max Verstappen. The F1 spotlight has been almost entirely on Horner in the days leading up to the new season, over his alleged behavior toward a team employee. “There is tension here while he remains in position,” Jos Verstappen told British newspaper the Daily Mail after his son won Saturday’s season-opening race in Bahrain. “The team is in danger of being torn apart. It can’t go on the way it is. It will explode. He (Horner) is playing the victim, when he is the one causing the problems.” On Wednesday, the team’s parent company dismissed a complaint of alleged misconduct by Horner toward a team employee. A day later during practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix, a file alleged to contain evidence against Horner — including alleged WhatsApp message exchanges — was emailed to nearly 200 people in the F1 paddock, including Liberty Media, F1, the FIA, the other nine team principals and media outlets. —AP
