NEW ORLEANS — There was no historic three-peat for the Kansas City Chiefs, just total domination by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Philadelphia’s defense sacked Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes six times and returned an interception for a touchdown in a 40-22 victory Sunday night to capture the Eagles’ second Super Bowl championship.
The victory also avenged a loss to the Chiefs in the Super Bowl two years ago.
With President Donald Trump in attendance and Taylor Swift watching Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce from her suite, the Eagles took control early and never relented. Kelce did not catch a pass until the third quarter as Philadelphia roared to a 24-0 halftime lead.
Trump was the first U.S. president to attend a Super Bowl.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a third score, and Saquon Barkley ran for 57 yards to break the NFL record for yards rushing in a season.
Neither needed a big game because Philadelphia’s defense controlled the line of scrimmage to shut down a Kansas City offense that had keyed back-to-back Super Bowl titles and was looking to lead the way to a record third in a row. So dominant was the Eagles’ defense that it didn’t once blitz against Mahomes, who passed for 257 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions.
