



SEATTLE >> Kyan Evans made a career-high six 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead No. 12 seed Colorado State past fifth-seeded Memphis 78-70 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
Nique Clifford, the Mountain West Tournament MVP, had his quietest scoring night in a month, finishing with 14 points, eight on free throws. He added eight rebounds and six assists for the Rams (26-9), who extended their winning streak to 11 games and advanced to face either Maryland or Grand Canyon in the second round on Sunday.
This 12-over-5 result was no shocker, with Colorado State a 2 1/2-point favorite according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Coach Penny Hardaway’s Tigers (29-7) were not at full strength, with veteran guard and third-leading scorer Tyrese Hunter sidelined by a left foot injury.
Dain Dainja had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Memphis, ending the season with his third straight double-double. P.J. Haggerty, the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, finished with 18 points.
Iowa State 82, Lipscomb 55 >> Milan Momcilovic scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half, and third-seeded Iowa State routed Lipscomb.
Alabama 90, Robert Morris 81 >> All-America guard Mark Sears scored 19 of his 22 points in the second half and second-seeded Alabama pulled away late to escape 15th-seeded Robert Morris.
Baylor 75, Mississippi State 72 >> Robert Wright scored 19 points, V.J. Edgecombe added 16 and No. 9 Baylor squeaked past No. 8 Mississippi State.
duke 93, mount st. mary’s 49 >> Tyrese Proctor had 19 points and freshman star Cooper Flagg returned from an ankle injury as No. 1 seed Duke beat Mount St. Mary’s.
Mississippi 71, North Carolina 64 >> Sean Pedulla made a critical 3-pointer with 52.8 seconds left, and Mississippi topped North Carolina after the Rebels squandered most of a 22-point lead in the second half.

Kentucky 79, Liberty 78 >> Georgia Amoore scored 34 points, including three free throws in the final 10 seconds for fourth-seeded Kentucky, which nearly blew a 17-point fourth-quarter lead but held on for a victory over 13th-seeded Liberty in the first round of the women’s NCAA Tournament.
The second-team All-America guard made 6 of 10 3-pointers and added eight assists, two steals and two blocks. She scored 23 first-half points for the Wildcats (23-7), who led 67-50 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
But Kentucky then went cold, going nearly five minutes without scoring and missing eight straight shots over that stretch. The Flames (26-7) got within 74-73 on a 3-pointer by Avery Mills — her only basket of the game — with 1:14 remaining.
Notre Dame 106, Stephen F. Austin 54 >> Olivia Miles departed Notre Dame’s victory over Stephen F. Austin because of a left knee injury, casting a shadow over the school’s dominant performance in the first round.
Miles fell to the court under the SFA basket with 8:44 left in the fourth quarter. The senior guard limped off the court and headed to the team’s locker room.
Miles, a first-team All-ACC selection, finished with two points and eight assists. She missed the 2023-2024 season because of a knee injury.
Michigan 80, Iowa State 74 >> Jordan Hobbs scored 28 points to help No. 6 Michigan hold off 11th-seeded Iowa State to advance to the second round.
The Wolverines (23-10) will play on Sunday in South Bend, Ind., against the winner of the Notre Dame-Stephen F. Austin game for a shot at the Sweet 16.
Indiana 76, Utah 68 >> Yarden Garzon scored 17 points and Shay Ciezki added 16 as No. 9 seed Indiana won its opener for a sixth straight NCAA Tournament with a victory over eighth-seeded Utah.
The Hoosiers (20-12) reached 20 wins for a sixth consecutive season.
Kansas State 85, Fairfield 41 >> Ayoka Lee had 17 points and 10 rebounds in her return to the lineup, and fifth-seeded Kansas State beat Fairfield.
TCU 73, Fairleigh dickinson 51 >> Madison Conner had 23 points with four 3-pointers and Sedona Prince overcame two early fouls to have 16 points and 10 rebounds as second-seeded TCU won over Fairleigh Dickinson in the Horned Frogs’ first women’s NCAA Tournament game at home.
Hailey Van Lith added 13 points and seven assists for the Big 12 champion Horned Frogs (32-3), who made their first NCAA appearance in 15 years. They have won their last 11 games.
Baylor 73, Grand Canyon 60 >> Aaronette Vonleh had 25 points and 11 rebounds, leading fourth-seeded Baylor to a victory over Grand Canyon.
South Carolina 108, Tennessee Tech 48 >> Freshman Joyce Edwards scored 22 points in her first women’s NCAA Tournament game as No. 1 seed South Carolina began its run at a second straight national title with a victory over Tennessee Tech.
The Gamecocks (31-3) improved to 17-1 in the past four women’s tournaments, winning in 2022 and 2024. The lone defeat came to Caitlin Clark and Iowa in the national semifinals in 2023.
