Andreeva, Draper win titles at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Calif.>> Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva came back to beat No. 1-ranked Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday to make the 17-year-old the tournament’s youngest champion since Serena Williams in 1999.

The 11th-ranked Andreeva improved to 19-3 this season and will return to that upper tier in Monday’s WTA rankings.

In the men’s final, 13th-seeded Jack Draper of Britain defeated 12th-seeded Holger Rune of Denmark 6-2, 6-2.

Draper, who is 23, upset two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals on Saturday.

Niemann wins at Singapore

SINGAPORE>> Joaquin Niemann of Chili played bogey-free for a 6-under 65 to win LIV Golf Singapore by five shots, his second LIV win of the year that moved him to the top of the points list and a step closer to a U.S. Open exemption.

Niemann was tied with Dustin Johnson going into the last round at Sentosa Golf Club. Johnson didn’t make a birdie until the 12th hole and shot 73 to tie for fifth.

Niemann won by five over Brooks Koepka (65). Ben Campbell (67) finished another shot back.

World champ Meillard wins slalom in Norway

HAFJELL, Norway>> World champion Loic Meillard won the season’s penultimate men’s World Cup slalom Sunday as the Swiss skier boosted his chances of taking the discipline title.

Meillard overcame a big mistake early in his final run and held on to his first-leg lead as he beat Atle Lie McGrath of Norway by 0.21 seconds. Lucas Pinheiro Braathen was 0.47 back in third.

“It was a wild second run with a few mistakes. I just wanted to fully attack, maybe even too much,” said Meillard, who also won Saturday’s giant slalom on the same hill. “It’s a dream for a tech skier to win both days, GS and slalom, and for it to happen this weekend is pretty amazing.”

Meillard’s sole previous career World Cup victory in slalom came in Aspen a year ago, though he took gold at the worlds in Austria in February.

Vikings say receiver Flatley has died at 84

EAGAN, Minn.>> Paul Flatley, the 1963 Associated Press NFL rookie of the year for the Minnesota Vikings who piled up more than 3,000 receiving yards over five seasons, has died at the age of 84, the team announced Sunday. The team said he died Saturday, but no additional details were provided.

Shifting from halfback to flanker at Northwestern, Flatley was a fourth-round pick (44th overall) by Minnesota in the 1963 draft, joining a team in just its third season. He had five catches for 72 yards in the season opener and started all 14 games in his debut season, finishing with 51 catches for 867 yards and four touchdowns.

After his playing career, he was a color commentator for the University of Minnesota football broadcast team for years.

Jorgenson wins back-to-back Paris-Nice titles

American cyclist Matteo Jorgenson won the week-long Paris-Nice race for the second straight year on Sunday.

On a good day for U.S. cycling Jorgenson, who rides for the Jumbo-Visma team, finished runner-up in the eighth and final stage claimed by his countryman Magnus Sheffield of the Ineos-Grenadiers team.
