As summer swings into full gear, my mind turns to all things sun and sea related. Maybe it’s the promise of warm rays wrapping me in bliss for a whole season.

And this season there are all kinds of extra-fun styles of swimsuits to make the most of summer, from retro-inspired pieces with details like boning and halter necklines to preppy one-pieces that push the Americana envelope and edgy animal-print bikinis that raise temps even higher.

I’m also thinking about the best places to wear these fab suits — from cosmopolitan rooftop city pool bars to picturesque resort seaside settings. It’s going to be a beautiful summer.

The look: Nautical Chic

The design: Take classic coastal preppy, add more stripes, and toss in a big dash of structure with a little bit of sexy. That’s the vibe this season, and it showed up on runways for designers such as Christian Dior. Rock it at a shore near you.

For example: The extraordinary and sleek one-piece Santorini Halterneck Swimsuit ($110 on bodenusa.com) in navy stripes is an absolute keeper. It makes sure everything stays tight and compact, with a bright red waistband — and figure-flattering boning at the sides. You’re welcome.

Where to wear it: The Nonantum Resort’s (nonantumresort.com) pool in Kennebunkport, ME. Is this serious preppy territory? You’re darn right it is. This is deep Bush Country (as in Presidents George H.W. and George W. — the compound is just down the street). The resort overlooks breathtaking sunsets for cocktails on The Kennebunk River.

The look: Retro Hollywood

The design: Think Grace Kelly and/or Audrey Hepburn looking effortlessly chic at a Beverly Hills poolside, making a lounge chair seem glamorous. That’s what this look is all about.

For example: The Aurora Striped Deep V One-Piece Swimsuit ($54.99 on myartisio.com) is a straight-up elegant wonder, made for lounging with a daiquiri (virgin or otherwise) in-hand. Its black and white stripes elevate your silhouette subtly and also provide incredible support, thanks to a padded halter neckline.

Where to wear it: The chic and cosmopolitan rooftop pool at Boston’s Colonnade Hotel (colonnadehotel.com/roof-top-pool), where the drinks are chilly, while the view and the conversations are definitely not.

The look: The Wild Side

The design: The obvious go-to animal prints in this category are leopard and zebra, although snakeskin and tiger certainly make plenty of appearances, as well (and sure, probably cheetah, too).

For example: The Ruched Plunge One-piece Swimsuit ($39.50-$59.50 on factory.jcrew.com) is not only wallet-friendly, it’s figure-friendly — especially for hourglass types looking for something easy to pull on for effortless style for the rest of the day. It’s a set it and forget it solution.

Where to wear it: The Red Jacket Beach Resort in South Yarmouth on Cape Cod, which just got an enormous makeover (redjacketresorts.com/resorts/beach-resort) is a double-whammy: a sprawling beach plus a sparkling pool, and it’s the perfect catwalk for any leopard-print creations.
