Fraser city officials this week said the demolition of the long-vacant State Bank of Fraser is expected to resume later this summer following a months-long delay.

Pennsylvania-based Sheetz, a chain of restaurant and fuel centers, plans an $8 million development to be constructed at the site of the former State Bank of Fraser on Utica and 14 Mile roads.

In an update posted to social media, city officials said the developer has secured a demolition permit that is valid until the end of September, with the option for extension if necessary.

“It is anticipated that demolition activities will resume in late July or early August,” officials said in the post.

Sheetz is currently finalizing its site plan, which is expected to be reviewed by the Planning Commission in July, according to the post. Although the specific timeline is not available, it is expected that construction will start shortly after the building is torn down and debris removed from the site.

After weeks of prep work, a construction crew from the Rochester Hills-based Adams Group on March 25 began tearing down the bank building. A few days later, the tear-down stopped and the workers vacated the premises.

A spokesperson for the developer, Columbus, Ohio-based Skilken Gold, agreed with the city’s post, saying the demolition will be back on track soon. The spokesperson said work on the permitting and engineering phase of the project is still ongoing.

“We look forward to working with the Planning Commission to receive our final site plan approval and appreciate the opportunity to be part of the Fraser community,” Nick Ruffner, public affairs manager for Sheetz, said in an email to the Macomb Daily.

Residents have complained on social media about the unkempt appearance of the old bank site. Within the past week, someone mowed the grass around the bank building.
