The Associated Press national player of the week in football for Week 2 of the season: Cam Skattebo, Arizona State

The Sun Devils’ fourth-year running back rushed for a career-high 262 yards and finished with 297 all-purpose yards in a 30-23 win over Mississippi State.

Skattebo’s 33 carries are the FBS single-game high so far this season. His final run was his longest, going for 39 yards to the Mississippi State 12 and allowing the Sun Devils to run out the clock.

He averaged 7.9 yards per carry while amassing the second-highest rushing total in program history behind Eno Benjamin’s 312 yards against Oregon State in 2018. His 12 runs of at least 10 yards, all against Mississippi State, lead the nation.

Former Clemson Receiver killed >> Former Clemson receiver Diondre Overton was shot and killed at a party in Greensboro, North Carolina, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department.

A release from the agency said the 26-year-old Overton was found by deputies responding to a loud noise disturbance from a party.

Despite medical aid, the department said Overton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hockey

Gaudreau brothers are mourned at their funeral>> John and Matthew Gaudreau were remembered as loving brothers and husbands who put family above hockey and everything else at a tearful funeral, a week and a half after they died when they were struck by a suspected drunken driver while riding bicycles in their home state of New Jersey.

Widows Meredith and Madeline Gaudreau described their husbands as attached at the hip throughout their lives. John was 31 and Matthew 29.

NFL

Hill placed in handcuffs before game >> Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins was handcuffed and placed face down on the ground by police during a traffic stop because he was not “immediately cooperative” with officers, the president of the South Florida police union said in a statement.

Passing fans and some teammates saw Hill in handcuffs with at least three officers around him following the stop outside the team’s home stadium that quickly went viral just hours before the Dolphins kicked off their season.

Packers’ Love won’t go on IR >> Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur says the team doesn’t plan to put Jordan Love on injured reserve, an indication the quarterback could return relatively soon.

Love injured his left medial collateral ligament in the final minute of the Packers’ season-opening 34-29 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday in Brazil. If the Packers placed Love on injured reserve, he would have to miss at least four games.

Pro Bowl DE Brown could miss rest of season >> Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl defensive lineman Derrick Brown will need surgery on his knee and could miss the remainder of the season.

Brown injured his meniscus in the Panthers’ 47-10 loss to the Saints and his loss would be a huge blow to a defense that struggled, allowing New Orleans to score on its first nine possessions.

Rams Nacua placed on IR >> Receiver Puka Nacua is headed to injured reserve after reaggravating his right knee injury in the Los Angeles Rams’ season-opening loss at Detroit.

Rams coach Sean McVay said that Nacua will be out for at least a month.

Nacua missed much of training camp and the preseason after injuring his knee in an early workout.

Bears Odunze has MRI >> Chicago Bears receiver Rome Odunze was having an MRI for a knee injury he suffered the previous day in his NFL debut, coach Matt Eberflus said.

Eberflus said he thinks Odunze was hurt blocking during Sunday’s season-opening win over the Tennessee Titans. He had little to say about the severity of the injury or the team’s level of concern.

Soccer

Alex Morgan retires after 15-year career>> Fighting tears, Alex Morgan waved to the crowd and walked off the field for the last time as she capped an impactful 15-year career.

Despite the nearly 100-degree heat, a crowd of 26,516 filled San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium for Morgan’s farewell match. The two-time Women’s World Cup winner announced on Thursday that she was pregnant with her second child and retiring from the game.

French Striker to stand trial for sexual assault >> France soccer player Wissam Ben Yedder was taken into custody over the weekend and will stand trial on charges of “sexual assault in a state of inebriation,” a judicial official told The Associated Press.

Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli told the AP the public prosecutor’s office has appealed against the decision not to remand Ben Yedder in custody after the player was released following his arrest.

Racing

First team eliminated from America’s Cup >> Orient Express Racing became the first team eliminated from the America’s Cup after losing to Britain’s INEOS Britannia.

The French boat finished last after the round-robin regattas and will not move on to the four-team playoffs that begin on Saturday.
