Terry Ryan and Rick Stelmaszek’s tenures with the Minnesota Twins spanned a lot of the same eras.

So it was fitting the two were inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame on the same night Saturday.

Ryan joined the Twins as scouting director in 1986 and went on to serve as the team’s general manager from 1994-2007 and again from 2011-16, helping build squads that won six American League Central titles from 2002 to 2010.

Stelmaszek, who died in 2017, was a Twins coach from 1981-2012, the longest coaching tenure in organization history. That run included World Series titles in 1987 and 1991.

“He and I were kind of in the same era,” Ryan said following Saturday’s ceremony that preceded the Twins’ matchup with Cleveland at Target Field.

“We had a lot in common. He touched a lot of players in uniform. Is touched a lot of players from upstairs.”

The two become the 39th and 40th members of the Hall, and many former members were on hand to welcome them Saturday.

“A lot of those guys were here for Stelly,” Ryan said. “He’s a popular guy.”

But Ryan has more than his share of admirers, too, including current Twins manager Rocco Baldelli.

“He’s universally loved and respected,” Baldelli said prior to Saturday’s game. “Especially right here (in Minnesota). I know a lot of people around here — employees, players, guys who have been with him — that owe him, that are endeared to him and really love the guy.

“I didn’t get a chance to (work with) him personally when he was here. But I’m sure it was a great experience based on what everyone says.”
