



Damion Downs scored in the sixth round of a shootout after three saves by Matt Freese, sending the U.S. to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 4-3 win on penalty kicks win over Costa Rica after a 2-2 tie on Sunday night in Minneapolis.
The U.S. advanced to a Wednesday matchup in St. Louis against Guatemala.
“They showed today great character,” U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said.
Mexico plays Honduras in the other semifinal on Wednesday in Santa Clara. The championship is in Houston on Sunday.
The U.S. has reached the semifinals in 17 of 18 Gold Cups, including 13 straight since a quarterfinal loss to Colombia on penalty kicks in 2000.
Diego Luna and Max Arfsten scored in regulation for the U.S., which faced its highest-ranked opponent of the tournament in Costa Rica (54th) after breezing through the group stage with an 8-1 goal differential.
Francisco Calvo gave Costa Rica a quick lead, scoring on a penalty kick in the 12th minute following a foul in the box by Arfsten.
Guatemala 1, Canada 1, Guatemala wins on PKs 6-5: José Morales sent Guatemala to the semifinals with the shootout clincher in the first game of the day at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Rubio Rubín scored the tying goal with a header in the 69th minute for Guatemala, which is 106th in the FIFA rankings and reached the semifinals for the first time since 1996.
The seven-round shootout was a fitting end to a fast-paced and feisty contest that went down as one of the best of this biennial tournament for North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Jonathan David scored on a penalty kick in the 30th minute for 30th-ranked Canada, which had to play the second half with 10 men after forward Jacob Sheffelburg was ejected in first-half stoppage time for a second yellow card.
Canada has been bounced from the quarterfinals in four of the last five Gold Cup tournaments.

Harry Kane scored twice and Bayern Munich capitalized on a quick start to beat Flamengo 4-2 in the FIFA Club World Cup round of 16 in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Germany’s premier soccer club regrouped quickly from its only loss of the tournament last week against Benfica, jumping out to a 2-0 lead and then holding off Flamengo’s comeback attempts to advance to the quarterfinals.
Bayern Munich will face Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday in Atlanta .
The Bundesliga champions struck early when Flamengo star Erick Pulgar headed the ball into his own net off a corner in the sixth minute. Kane struck his first goal three minutes later, and Leon Goretzka made it 3-1 at halftime.
