ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.>> The last thing Von Miller wanted to discuss upon returning to practice on Wednesday was the reason behind his absence — a four-game NFL suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
Except to say he carried no grudge against the NFL, Miller declined to say whether he was surprised by the discipline or considered appealing it.
“I’m in a great spot. I’m just happy all of that stuff is behind me,” said Miller, who joined the AFC East-leading Bills for their preparations for Sunday’s matchup with the Dolphins. “I really don’t even have to touch on any of that stuff any more.”
Miller was referring to what happened 11 months ago when he turned himself in to police in suburban Dallas after being accused of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend, who is also the mother of two of his children.
Miller previously disputed the allegations by calling them false and blown out of proportion. With no charges filed, Miller opened training camp in July by saying he considered the case closed based on feedback from his attorneys. The lack of charges didn’t prevent the NFL from disciplining Miller based on its own investigation.
The 35-year-old is eager to pick up where he left off in building on the self-confidence he generated with three sacks in four games to increase his NFL active-leading total to 1261/2. The production was encouraging for Miller after he failed to get a sack in 14 games, including playoffs, last year while still recovering from right knee surgery.
“For me it was just being able to prove it to myself,” Miller said.
COLTS CHANGED QBS TO WIN>> Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen provided a simple explanation for making the quarterback change. He wants to win now — and so do the Colts.
One day after news broke that Anthony Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft, would be benched in favor of 39-year-old Joe Flacco, Steichen made his first public comments and acknowledged he made the decision for one reason, committing to Flacco for the foreseeable future.
“It’s my obligation to 53 guys in this organization to win football games,” he said. “Right now, Joe Flacco gives us the best chance.”
The 22-year-old Richardson has struggled with his performance and an injured right hip.
LAMAR JACKSON DOESN’T PRACTICE>> Lamar Jackson missed practice for the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday.
John Harbaugh said the star quarterback had a rest day, but the Ravens did list him on their injury report with back and knee issues.
YOUNG TO START AGAIN>> Bryce Young is scheduled to get his second straight start on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, who expect to have Derek Carr return under center for the first time since Week 5.
Carolina coach Dave Canales said he wanted to err on the side of caution and give Andy Dalton another week to recover from the thumb injury he suffered in a car accident last week.
Carr practiced on Wednesday for the first time since injuring an oblique muscle at Kansas City on Oct. 7.
JETS PUT KICKER ON IR>> The New York Jets placed struggling kicker Greg Zuerlein on injured reserve and signed potential replacements Riley Patterson and Spencer Shrader to the practice squad. Zuerlein, who has missed six of his 15 field-goal attempts this season, has an issue with his left, non-kicking leg.
EAGLES PLAY GOLF WITH OBAMA>> Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley and team owner Jeffrey Lurie hit the links this week at Merion Golf Club with a group of golfers that included former President Barack Obama.
“He’s like an uncle figure out there,” Hurts said. “President Obama. All-time leader. Great presence. I guess the word is, down to earth. I can only imagine that lifestyle and the different things that come with that. To see him out there, enjoying himself, talk a little trash, that was cool.”
Hurt just walked the course. He can’t play golf under his contract.
