Munster sophomore Alice Foley is listed as a defender, but she came alive Tuesday on the offensive end.

Four minutes into the first session of overtime, Foley’s free kick deflected off Crown Point goalkeeper Madi Dross and into the net to clinch a 3-2 win in the first round of the Class 3A Crown Point Sectional.

Munster (10-6) will play Lowell, which beat Morton 6-2 in the first game.

“I was just going up and trying to take the shot quick,” Foley said. “I asked for 10 yards but noticed the goalie on the post — put it down and played it as hard as I could.”

The Mustangs lost 4-3 to the Bulldogs on Thursday.

“That definitely left a bad taste,” Foley said. “We were all really disappointed after that game, and we just took that and ran with it. We put it all out there (Tuesday).”

Foley scored two goals, including one in the 44th minute that tied the game. The Mustangs trailed 1-0 after Crown Point’s Libby Rockovits score in the opening minute.

“Alice is calm on the ball and reads it extremely well,” Munster coach Val Pflum said. “She puts the ball in the right place in the right time. She stepped up huge and did a great job to shut down (Crown Point forward) Olivia Small in the midfield.”

Emmie McConnell countered for the Bulldogs in the 58th minute. Munster’s Adeline Andello delivered the equalizer a few minutes later to send the game into OT.

“The girls started going to the ball a lot more and playing faster,” Pflum said. “We played a more physical game, which is what I think we needed to do.”

The Bulldogs will lose six senior starters to graduation.

“Unless you win the state championship, you’re going to lose sometime,” Crown Point coach Chris Mikrut said. “Dead balls are gonna win games and (Munster) got two of them and that’s dangerous. We figured some things out from the first time we played them. We just had to clean those last few plays up.”

“It’s definitely hard to lose in the first round, but the girls gave everything they had. We knew it’d be a tough game and knew a good team was gonna go down tonight and it was us.”

Elyanah Goodall and Alyssa Durall scored twice in the win for Lowell (4-10-1), which scored five times in the second half.

“We were able to get better passing and ball movement,” Red Devils coach Scott Baum said. “It was really them getting riled up into the game and building our girls up mentally so that they played better on the field.”
