


Defender Sam Adekugbe scored early, Brian White scored late and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Galaxy 2-1 on Sunday, handing the defending MLS Cup champions a second straight defeat to begin the season.
Adekugbe scored unassisted in the third minute to give the Whitecaps (2-0-0) the lead. It was his second goal of the season and his third in 44 appearances with the club.
The Galaxy pulled even in the 39th minute when Gabriel Pec used assists from Miguel Berry and 21-year-old rookie midfielder Elijah Wynder to score the Galaxy’s first goal of the season. Pec had 16 goals and 14 assists as a rookie last season in the championship run. The Galaxy lost 2-0 to San Diego FC — an expansion team — in their home opener.
White’s winner came in the 87th minute when he used his head to score off a long pass from Pedro Vite. It was the first goal for White, who is coming off back-to-back 15-goal seasons. Vite’s helper was his first of the season and the ninth of his career.
Yohei Takaoka finished with one save for the Whitecaps.
Novak Micovic saved two shots in his sixth career start for the Galaxy.
The Galaxy return home to play St. Louis City on Sunday.
COLLEGE GYMNASTICS
Third-ranked UCLA won its first Big Ten regular- season title after a first-place finish at the Big Four Meet at Ohio State. The Bruins (12-2) went unbeaten in conference with a 9-0 record.
The Bruins earned their eighth straight meet victory with their first-place score of 197.200 in the Big Four Meet. Nebraska was second with 196.675, Ohio State was third with 196.650, and Rutgers was fourth with 195.875.
UCLA’s Jordan Chiles won the all-around for the third consecutive meet, scoring 39.550.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Jaden Akins scored 19 points and Jaxon Kohler had 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead No. 8 Michigan State to a 71-62 win over No. 11 Wisconsin on Sunday in East Lansing, Mich.
The Spartans (24-5, 15-3 Big Ten) have won five straight, putting them in position to contend for the conference championship with a week left in the regular season.
The Badgers (22-7, 12-6) had won six of seven.
Illinois 93, No. 15 Michigan 73: Tre White had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Illini (19-11, 11-8 Big Ten) over the Wolverines (22-7, 14-4) in Detroit.

PJ Haggerty scored 17 of his 25 points in the final 12 minutes to help the Tigers (24-5, 14-2) rally from an 11-point deficit to beat the host Blazers (19-10, 12-4) and inch closer to the American Athletic Conference regular-season title. Colby Rogers hit five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points for Memphis and Dain Dainja had 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Tyrese Hunter added 13 points.

No. 1 Texas 72, Florida 46: Kyla Oldacre scored 18 points and the Longhorns (29-2, 15-1 SEC) beat the Gators Florida (14-16, 5-11) in Austin, Texas, to earn a share of the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship with South Carolina.
No. 3 Notre Dame 72, No. 25 Louisville 59: Hannah Hidalgo scored 20 points and the Fighting Irish (25-4 overall, 16-2 ACC) bounced back from consecutive losses to clinch a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title with a win over the visiting Cardinals (20-9 overall, 13-5 ACC). Notre Dame has won or shared the ACC title eight times since joining the league in the 2013-2014 season. The Fighting Irish shared the title with N.C. State.
No. 5 Connecticut 92, Marquette 57: Paige Bueckers had 19 points, 7 assists and 3 steals in her final regular-season game to lead the Huskies (28-3, 18-0 in the Big East) over visiting Marquette (20-9, 12-6).
No. 6 South Carolina 78, No. 15 Kentucky 66: Tessa Johnson scored 16 points, and the Gamecocks (27-3, 15-1) claimed a share of the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship by beating the visiting Wildcats (22-6, 11-5). South Carolina has won at least a share of the regular-season title for the past four seasons.
Mississippi 85, No. 7 LSU 77: Tameiya Sadler scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers, and Ole Miss (19-9, 10-5 SEC) rallied from a late 15-point deficit to stun the host Tigers (27-4, 12-4).
Virginia 78, No. 8 North Carolina 75: Paris Clark and Kymora Johnson each hit two late foul shots to help the Cavaliers (16-14, 8-10 ACC) beat the host Tar Heels (25-6, 13-5). Latasha Lattimore had 23 points and Johnson had 15 points, 11 assists and 9 rebounds for Virginia.
Deaths
Pittsburgh freshman cornerback Mason Alexander died Saturday in a car crash in Indiana, authorities said.Alexander, 18, was a passenger in a car that swerved off the road and struck a tree in Fishers, a suburb of Indianapolis, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. The car burst into flames on impact. Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene.
SKIING
Federica Brignone won an eventful women’s World Cup super-G as the Italian skier capped a three-race weekend in Kvitfjell, Norway, that extended her lead in the overall standings.
In a tight finish, Brignone was 0.06 seconds faster than defending overall champion Lara Gut-Behrami.
Brignone also finished ahead of her Swiss rival by placing fifth and fourth, respectively, in two downhills earlier in the weekend.
American Lindsey Vonn finished 1.11 seconds off the lead in 16th after what started as a promising run.
The American standout was level with Brignone at her first intermediate time and just 0.13 behind the Italian halfway through her run.
Vonn then caught a bump in a left turn and was thrown off the race line.
Vonn, the record holder with 28 career super-G wins, made her comeback this season at the age of 40 with a new titanium knee after six years away from racing.
Henrik Kristoffersen came from behind to win a men’s World Cup slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, for his second victory in two days. Kristoffersen, who also won Saturday’s giant slalom, led Timon Haugan by 0.17 for a Norwegian 1-2 finish.
