TODAY’S TOP GAMES

NARBONNE (1-0) at LOS ALAMITOS (1-0)

Outlook: This is a big early-season test for the Gauchos. Los Alamitos advanced to the CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals last season and is led by senior quarterback Alonzo Esparza (Cal commit). Los Alamitos defeated Western 71-0 last week. Narbonne opened with a 28-14 win over Garfield. Jaden O’Neal completed 18 of 27 passes for 188 yards and scored two rushing TDs. Hakim Frampton had an 88-yard kickoff return for a TD. Linebacker Mark Edwards Jr. (transfer from Palmdale) and wide receiver Michael Ashford III (transfer from Cathedral) were cleared by the L.A. City Section this week to play for Narbonne. Can the Gauchos put all their pieces together for the win?

Prediction: Los Alamitos

INGLEWOOD (1-0) vs. NORTH TORRANCE (1-0) At Coleman Stadium

Outlook: Both the Sentinels and Saxons opened the season with big wins last week. North, behind a five-touchdown night from Boogie Anetema, routed Long Beach Jordan 49-7. Anetema completed 17 of 25 passes for 306 yards, with four of his touchdown passes going to his brother Kingston. Inglewood defeated Villa Park 35-14. Wyatt McCauley completed 17 of 25 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown. Victor Santino rushed for 182 yards and four touchdowns. A good matchup to watch will be the North passing attack against Inglewood’s secondary, which is led by corners Jailen Hill and Jake Whitehead. This is the first meeting between these teams since 2019.

Prediction: Inglewood

WARREN (0-1) at SERRA (0-1)

Outlook: One week after losing their opener 21-13 to Orange Lutheran, the Cavaliers take aim at Warren and QB Madden Iamaleava, who is a UCLA commit. Warren dropped its season opener 30-21 to Kamehameha Kapalama (Hawaii). Iamaleava missed the Serra game last season. Serra won that meeting 27-0. Last week, Serra had chances to score against Orange Lutheran, but the offense never found its comfort zone against the Lancers’ defensive pressure. Jimmy Butler completed 14 of 30 passes for 223 yards, but no touchdowns. The Cavaliers’ scores came on Butler’s two rushing TDs. Serra’s offense is too good to be held to just 13 points, so look for a bounce back against Warren.

Prediction: Serra

PENINSULA (1-0) at EL SEGUNDO (1-0)

Outlook: The two teams are in different leagues this season — Peninsula in the Pioneer League and El Segundo in the Ocean League — and both have good chances at claiming league titles. This matchup offers a good test for both. Peninsula leaned on its defense for a 15-8 win over Alta Loma last week. Mario Ruggiero had a pair of touchdown passes. El Segundo defeated Sierra Vista 56-6, led by Ryan Wiacek’s three passing touchdowns. He also rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown. It will be interesting to see if El Segundo can get its passing attack on track. Also, can the Eagles win the battle up front and slow down Peninsula’s grinding offense? This is the first meeting between the teams since 2019.

Prediction: Peninsula

ST. FRANCIS (0-1) at MIRA COSTA (0-0)

Outlook: The annual Mira Costa-St. Francis meeting is usually a high-scoring clash. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they haven’t been able to come out on top. St. Francis has won the last five meetings, even though the Mustangs have averaged 35 points a game in the losses. St. Francis lost to St. Bonaventure (38-7) in last week’s opener. The Mustangs return eight starters on defense and quarterback Nico De La Cruz is back for his senior season. The Mustangs are trying to replace their top receivers from a year ago.

Prediction: Mira Costa
