If you’re going to take a trip to Winters, there are five murals around town that you need to see for yourself.
“The murals that we have around town are close to my heart,” said Liz Coman of the Winters Participation Gallery. “It certainly adds beauty to the buildings that we create the murals on. I think it can be an economic driver. Our ideas going forward are to have QR codes on the murals that people can go directly to information about those murals. All of the murals have some type of historical aspect to it.”
The murals are located within a mile of each other near the main roads in town. The pieces of art were created in 2022 by Winters High School students who participated in the Winters Historical Mural Project.
“Another reason why it’s close to my heart is because the murals are designed and painted by students,” Coman explained. “We have some professional artists, two professional muralists and one art teacher, the art teacher leads the students through the design process. Then the two muralists oversee the implementation of the mural on the wall. But it’s designed by and painted by students. As a teacher, that’s certainly dear to my heart.”
To avoid going back and forth within town, like a certain Daily Democrat reporter, follow this road map to find all five murals and bask in their greatness.
The first stop is the Winters Museum, located at 13 Russell St. At this location, part of the mural displays the rich history of journalism in town, including the long lineage of editors for the Winters Express newspaper.
The next stop is steps away at the Winters Laundromat, located at 211 First St. At this location, the mural displays prominent nature and animals that are significant to the town’s history.
At the third stop, you can kill two birds with one stone if you have some mail to send off. The Winters Post Office is the midway point of your journey, located at 510 Railroad Ave. This mural displays the great history of the postal service in town.
The fourth stop of your journey takes you steps away from the minds who created the murals at Winters High School. The Winters Market is where all the high schoolers congregate after school inside and outside the store, located at 3 Grant Ave.
The fifth and final stop of your journey is at Lorenzo’s Market, located at 121 East Grant Ave. This location could be either your first or last stop, depending on the path you decide to take when coming into town, especially from Woodland. This mural is big and bold, stretching the entire length of the large Lorenzo’s building.
“It’s a way for the student to do some community service and give back to the community and have some fun,” Coman said. “It takes place during the summer over the course of six weeks. Because the Winters Participation Gallery for the Arts does fundraising, it’s free for the students. They don’t have to pay any kind of application fee or fee for any of it. We fundraise for the supplies to pay the artists, for the power-washing and priming of the wall, all of that.”
All five murals are located within approximately seven-tenths of a mile in town. If you’re headed to Winters, take some time to enjoy the arts while you’re there.
