A 34-year-old man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of drunken driving and vehicular homicide in a Jefferson County crash on Interstate 70 that killed another driver and sent a toddler to the hospital, police said.

Jian Bin Chen was arrested by Wheat Ridge police officers and booked into Jefferson County Jail on investigation of vehicular homicide, DUI, driving on the wrong side of a divided highway and failure to present evidence of insurance, according to jail records.

Alex Rose, a spokesman for the Wheat Ridge Police Department, said Chen was driving westbound on eastbound I-70 early Thursday morning when he collided with another car.

The woman driver died at the scene and her toddler was sent to the hospital, Rose said. The toddler is expected to survive and be placed with another family member.

Wheat Ridge officers responded to the two-car crash at about 5:15 a.m. Thursday, police said. The crash investigation shut down the eastbound interstate for more than five hours. As of 10:45 a.m., eastbound I-70 had reopened between Colorado 72, also known as Ward Road, and 32nd Avenue in Wheat Ridge, according to the police department.

Rose said the preliminary investigation led to officers recommending the four charges listed in court records. However, more could be added at any time as the investigation progresses, he said. Chen has not officially been charged and is scheduled to appear in Jefferson County Combined Court on Friday.
