SANTA CRUZ >> Forward Blake Hinson scored a career-high 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, and the Santa Cruz Warriors beat the Austin Spurs 119-103 in NBA G League action at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Friday.
Hinson was 7-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. The Warriors shot 57.1% (16 of 28) on 3-point attempts and never trailed.
The Warriors, Austin, and Mexico City are all 10-6 and tied for second place in the Western Conference, 2.5 games off the pace of Stockton (14-5).
Forward Javan Johnson was equally impressive for Santa Cruz. He was 6-of-10 shooting on 3-pointers and finished with 28 points and five rebounds.
Guard Yuri Collins earned his sixth double-double of the season with 19 points, 13 assists, and nine rebounds. Forward Donta Scott recorded 14 points and seven rebounds and guard Marcus Burk contributed 13 points and three rebounds off the bench.
Guard Malachi Flynn led Austin in scoring with 29 points and seven rebounds, and former Palma School guard Jamaree Bouyea followed close behind with 20 points, five assists, and four rebounds.
Forwards Quinton Rose and Kyle Rode combined for 23 points off the bench. Rose finished with 12 points, four steals, and two rebounds, and Rode notched 11 points and two rebounds. Two-way guard David Duke Jr. rounded out the Spurs’ scoring effort with 10 points and three rebounds.
Earlier Friday, the Golden State Warriors converted two-way center Quinten Post’s contract to a standard NBA contract. Santa Cruz acquired 6-foot-4 guard Alex Gil-Fernandez from the available player pool.
Gil-Fernandez, who went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, had a five-year collegiate career at Foothill College (2016-18) and Cal State San Marcos (2019-22). He has career averages of 13.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.0 steal per game through 104 appearances (88 starts).
Gil-Fernandez made his debut off the bench in Santa Cruz’s win.
The teams were scheduled to play again at KP Arena on Saturday night, after the Sentinel went to press.
