Alessandro Castro scored the equalizer in the 56th minute on a pass from Kotetsu Horike, and the UC Santa Cruz men’s soccer team earned a 1-all draw against visiting William Jessup to remain unbeaten on the season Wednesday.

It was the first goal this season for Castro, a freshman midfielder out of Adrian Wilcox High in Santa Clara.

Tariq Alabi gave the Warriors (0-3-3) the early lead with his unassisted tally in the 20th minute.

Goalie Chris Jamrok made four saves over 90 minutes for the Banana Slugs (4-0-5). Antonio Camacho, one of three Warriors to play goalie against UCSC, made his team’s lone save.

Both teams attempted 13 shots. Michael Braun had the Banana Slugs’ only other shot on goal.William Jessup had the lone corner kick in the physical contest, which featured two Warriors receiving yellow cards for unsafe or unsportsmanlike play. WJU was whistled for 20 fouls and UCSC was called for seven.

UCSC hosts NAIA program UC Merced (3-0-2) on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Girls cross country

WCAL meet No. 1 >> Archbishop Mitty senior Evie Marheineke, a Santa Cruz resident, placed first out of 46 runners in the West Catholic Athletic League meet No. 1, held at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Wednesday.

Marheineke completed the 3-mile course in 18:01. Junior teammate Alessia Carbone, a Scotts Valley resident, took 14th in 19:57.

Mitty (87 points) took third out of seven schools. Saint Francis (20) of Mountain View took first.

The Monarchs will race next at the Clovis Invitational in October.

Men’s water polo

Cabrillo 20, Merced 19 >> Joe Brennan pushed a loose ball into the goal for the decisive score as time expired and the Seahawks earned their first win Wednesday.

Brennan finished with a team-high six goals.

Cabrillo trailed 16-15 entering the fourth quarter, and the teams were deadlocked at 19-all with 3:12 remaining.

“It was our best start to a game this season and our most well-played game,” Seahawks coach Jasper Billings said.

Nolan Nguyen scored five goals for the Seahawks. Brandon Smith scored three goals. Aidan Howard and Josh Retzlaff each scored twice, and Ayden Reed and Sam Primavera each scored a goal.

Goalkeeper Ben Duarte made six saves for the Seahawks (1-8-1, 1-1), who open the two-day Cuesta Tournament on Friday at 10:20 a.m. against Orange Coast (7-4).

Girls volleyball

St. Francis 3, at Marina 2 >> Junior outside hitter Peyton Orradre had 10 kills and six aces, and the Sharks rallied for a 14-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22, 15-13 win in the teams’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division match Wednesday.

Senior middle blocker Carley Anderson had eight kills and two blocks for the Sharks. Junior setter Georgia Otzman had 16 assists and classmate Julie Lopez had 10 assists.

“We started off really rocky, but perseverance and control on our side of the court paid off,” Sharks coach Sabrina Bracken said. “I’m extremely proud of the girls for that win. Anytime you win a game in five sets, especially an away game, it’s a big deal.”

St. Francis (10-4, 3-1) plays at Pacific Collegiate on Friday at 6 p.m.

At Kirby 3, Ceiba 0 >> Senior outside hitter Charlotte Nielsen had 14 kills and 10 digs, and the Griffins earned a 25-21, 29-27, 25-22 sweep in PCAL Santa Lucia Division action Wednesday.

Senior outside hitter Annabel Mahnke had six kills and four digs for the Griffins. Senior setter Emi Roberts had 19 assists, and senior libero Lucia Nakashima had 22 digs.

Kirby (1-4 league) plays Monterey Bay Academy on Monday at Branciforte Middle School at 6 p.m.

Greenfield 3, at Pacific Collegiate 0 >> Aleena Salas had 12 kills and five digs in the Bruins’ 25-16, 25-11, 25-22 sweep of the Pumas in PCAL Cypress Division play Wednesday.

de Geus recalled >> The Toronto Blue Jays recalled right-handed pitcher Brett de Geus, a Cabrillo College alum, from Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old from Pleasanton native was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins on Sept. 12 and has yet to pitch for the Blue Jays.
