Born August 11, 1930, entered into eternal life on January 2, 2025. He was a devoted husband to Carol Jean (nee Lamphere) for 65 years.
Dick is survived by his wife and their four children: Jim (Karen), Tom, Chris (Lynn) and Mary (Allen) Hawley. He was blessed with seven grandchildren: Kyle (Desteney), Kaitlin (Derek) Kindig, Keely (Brett) Watts, Magdeline, Marissa, Audrey and Wyatt Hawley, and three greatgrandchildren: Carter and Lylah, and Cooper Watts. He was also survived by his sisters-in-law Sharon Joswiak and Diane (Paul) Radintz. Dick grew up in Mendota, Minnesota with his parents, Leonard and Margie (nee Shattuck), and his two brothers Theodore and Jack (Pat) (all predeceased). He was also predeceased by his sister-in-law, Marilyn Locke and brothers-in-law, Michael Locke and Larry Joswiak. He was a committed altar server at the Church of St. Peter in Mendota Heights. He began his elementary education in a one-room schoolhouse and graduated valedictorian of South St. Paul High School in 1947. Dick attended the University of Minnesota, earning B.S. in Engineering and B.C.E with distinction in 1952. He served with the United States Army Corps of Engineers for two years as a Structural Engineer during the Korean War. Dick joined the Architectural/ Engineering firm of Magney, Tusler, Setter (later Setter Leach & Lindstrom) in 1955 as a structural draftsman, became head of the Structural Department in 1958, and eventually served as President and CEO of Setter Leach &Lindstrom for 17 years until his retirement in 1997.
Dick traveled all over the world throughout the course of his life. He and Carol would occasionally bring the family, but they much preferred a couple’s getaway to Europe, Australia, and all corners of the United States.
Dick was an avid golfer and longtime member of The New Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, and Past President of Interlachen Country Club in Edina.
Dick was admired by coworkers, family and friends alike for his nononsense attitude, commitment to excellence, and uncompromising integrity. He was a devout Catholic - amember of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre - and lived his life in the example of Christ. He loved Wheaties, chocolate chip cookies, vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup, good scotch “with extra ice” and a glass of milk with his meals. Richard left an indelible legacy in the minds and hearts of all who knew him.
