The Woodland Christian varsity girls basketball team remained perfect in the Sierra Delta League following an emphatic 74-18 win over Golden Sierra on Tuesday night.
Led by a game-high 22 points from senior Teagan Hayes and another 16 from sophomore Siena Sorbello, the Cardinals (10-5, 4-0 SDL) remained perfect in the league, winning their eighth game in a row across all competitions in the process.
“We made the long drive to Golden Sierra, knowing they were in a bunch of teams tied for second (at 2-1) in the league,” Cardinals head coach Shiloh Sorbello said. “After a great practice yesterday, we were primed for a good game. We came out incredibly strong, shutting them out 24-0 in the first quarter with five players scoring at least two baskets each in the frame.”
The Cardinals led 24-0 after the first quarter, 45-2 at halftime and 55-11 after the third before the eventual 74-18 win.
Hayes also racked up 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals. Keziah Maldonado-Lemus continued her strong play with 11 points, a season-high 11 rebounds, 8 assists and 7 steals. Along with her 16 points, Sorbello racked up 8 rebounds while rebounding specialist Bailee Broward led the team with 16 boards.
“We took the foot off the gas in the third quarter, and they took advantage, scoring 9 points in the quarter,” Sorbello recalled. “But Ellie Sumner matched that by herself in the 4th quarter, en route to her season high of 13 points, and we finished strong.
Elena Ganyo had a solid all-around game with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.
By the time this story is printed, the Cardinals will have played Winters on Wednesday night. They will then resume SDL play on Friday at 6 p.m. when they host San Juan.
