Brandon Nimmo hit a grand slam and matched a franchise record with nine RBIs, helping the visiting New York Mets pound the Washington Nationals 19-5 on Monday.
Nimmo also hit a three-run drive in his seventh career multihomer game. The left fielder had four hits and scored four times after beginning the day with a .192 batting average.
He was mired in a 7-for-47 (.149) slump with no extra-base hits in his previous 12 games.
The Mets split the four-game series and have won nine of 11 overall to improve to an MLB-best 20-9.
Jeff McNeil and Mark Vientos also homered for New York, which finished with 21 hits. Vientos connected for a three-run drive against Nationals infielder Amed Rosario in the ninth.
The Mets had a 3-0 lead when Colin Poche replaced Nationals starter Trevor Williams (1-3) with two on in the sixth. Nimmo greeted the left-hander by ripping a 2-0 fastball deep to right-center.
An inning later, the Mets had the bases loaded when Nimmo sent Cole Henry’s fastball into the right-field seats for his second career slam.
Nimmo added a two-run double in the eighth to tie the franchise record for RBIs set by Carlos Delgado against the New York Yankees on June 27, 2008.
Griffin Canning (4-1) pitched five innings of four-hit ball for New York.
He has won four consecutive starts.
Reds 3, Cardinals 1: Nick Martinez pitched six sparkling innings, and Cincinnati defeated visiting St. Louis for its fifth straight win.
Martinez (1-3) allowed one run and five hits.
Jose Trevino homered for Cincinnati, and Noelvi Marte drove in the go-ahead run with a triple.
Orioles 4, Yankees 3: Ryan O’Hearn hit a three-run homer off Will Warren in the third inning and Baltimore won at home over New York.
Ramón Laureano doubled in the Orioles’ first run in the second, and 35-year-old rookie Tomoyuki Sugano (3-1) struck out eight over five scoreless innings to help Baltimore stop a three-game losing streak.
Aaron Judge, hitting a major league-leading .405, had two hits to extend his on-base streak to 25 games and drove in New York’s first run when he hit into a forceout in the seventh inning.
Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells hit consecutive RBI doubles with one out in the eighth off Gregory Soto, Astros 8, Tigers 5: Jose Altuve hit a two-run homer in the sixth that sent Houston to a home win over Detroit.
Christian Walker had a two-run shot in the fourth to begin the Astros’ comeback from a 3-0 deficit. Houston still trailed by one when Jeremy Peña singled in the sixth. Altuve followed with his drive to left off Jack Flaherty (1-3) that put Houston up 4-3.
Altuve had two hits and three RBIs while batting second for the first time since 2023. He asked to move out of the leadoff spot to give him more time to get ready to hit in the first inning after coming in from the outfield.
Houston’s victory snapped a fourgame winning streak for the Tigers, who got two homers from Riley Greene and one from Kerry Carpenter but managed just two other hits.
Braves 6, Rockies 3: Bryce Elder (1-1) pitched six solid innings, Michael Harris II hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the fifth and Atlanta downed host Colorado, which has dropped seven straight games and 15 of 16 to fall to 4-24, the worst record in the majors.
Elder gave up a three-run homer in the first to Hunter Goodman but just three hits the rest of the way.
Twins 11, Guardians 1: Jonah Bride had three of Minnesota’s 17 hits, Bailey Ober (3-1) allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings and the Twins rolled to a road victory over Cleveland.
Six Twins had at least two hits, including Ryan Jeffers, who had a two-run homer and three RBIs.
Edouard Julien also went deep for the Twins, who have won four straight and six of seven.
Ty France and Byron Buxton each drove in a pair of runs.
Athletics 2, Rangers 1: Tyler Soderstrom hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to help JP Sears and the visitiing Athletics defeat Texas.
Sears (4-2) struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings. He allowed one run and five hits.
The Rangers finished with six hits in their seventh loss in 10 games.
