



A slew of league titles were handed out last week in swimming, lacrosse, boys golf, and boys volleyball. The Terra Linda boys swim team put on one of the top performances across the board, winning all but one race at MCALs while setting multiple meet records.
The Tam girls avenged a close loss to Redwood last season to claim the title this year. Redwood won the boys tennis title, Tam won the boys golf title, and Marin Catholic swept the lacrosse titles.
Marin Academy also had a banner week, sweeping the lacrosse and swimming titles.
Ben Butler, Nicholas Arinduque, and Cam Hellar, Terra Linda boys swimming >> The Trojans put together a dominant team-wide performance on Saturday to win their second consecutive MCAL title with a staggering 589 points. Butler, who is set to swim for the University of Arizona next year, was a part of three meet records and a league record as he won the 200 individual medley (1:50.20), the 100 freestyle (44.99), and was on the 400 free relay and 200 medley relay teams. Hellar and Arinduque were both triple winners with Hellar taking the 200 free (1:43.27) and the 500 free (4:42.45) and Arinduque was victorious in the 100 fly (51.41) and 100 breast (56.95). Hellar was on the 400 free relay and Arinduque was on the 200 medley relay.
Addison Everage and Sophia Uhlhorn-Thornton, Tam girls swimming >> Everage and Uhlhorn-Thortnon led the way as Tam claimed its first swimming title since 2018. Everage was a triple winner, securing the 200 IM (2:10.41) and 100 back titles (56.00) to go along with the 200 medley relay. Uhlhorn-Thornton, who missed MCALs last season with a devastating knee injury, won the 100 fly (1:01.00) and was also on the 200 medley relay team.
Esme Quay, Marin Catholic girls swimming >> Quay, a junior, has won the 50 free every season so far, picking up her third consecutive title in the event with a time of 23.91 seconds. Quay also defended her title in the 100 breast, taking that for the second year in a row with a time of 1:05.90.
Avery Gunst, Redwood girls swimming >> Gunst, a sophomore, broke through this season after a pair of strong performances at MCALs in the 200 IM and 100 fly as a freshman. Gunst won the 200 free in 1:58.71 and the 500 free in 5:28.79.
Holly Hovey, Archie Williams girls swimming >> Hovey took home three medals on Saturday and came awfully close to winning a fourth. Hovey, a sophomore, took first place in the 100 free in 53.70 and competed on a pair of winning relay teams for the Peregrine Falcons. Hovey placed second to Quay in the 50 free in 24.21 seconds.
Cameron Forbes, Marin Academy girls swimming >> MA’s standout freshman was a triple winner at the Bay Area Conference Championships, including setting a conference record in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.70. Forbes also placed second in the 100 back and was a part of two victorious relays as MA emerged as champions.
Riggins Scheumann, Marin Academy boys swimming >> Scheumann was a quadruple winner at the BAC championship meet, setting a conference record of 21.14 seconds in the 50 free in the process. Scheumann, a freshman, won the 100 (46.81) and was on the winning 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams to help MA become champions.
Cole O’Connell, Redwood boys golf >> O’Connell, a sophomore, shaved 16 strokes off his score at the MCAL championships on Thursday at StoneTree Golf Club en route to winning the event with a 71. O’Connell shot an 87 last year in windy conditions. The weather was just about perfect this year as O’Connell made a pair of birdies on the front nine and piled up pars on the back nine to secure the victory.
Max Berg, Tam boys golf >> The 2022 individual championship posted Tam’s low score of the day as the Red-tailed Hawks won the team title on a tiebreaker after matching MC’s five-golfer score of 393. Berg shot a 75 to lead the way. Ben Friedman (76), Hayden Thill (79), Elliot Dasovich (81), and Shade Murray (82) were also key. Abe Willard’s 83 won the tiebreaker and the title for Tam.
Julian Zhang and Casra Afsharipour, Redwood boys tennis >> Redwood’s top two singles players won both of their matches convincingly last week to lead the Giants to the MCAL title. Zhang, Redwood’s No. 1 singles player, dropped just three games total in victories against Tam and Branson. Afsharipour dropped just one game over the course of his two victories.
Jake Holmes and Mattias Murdick, Marin Catholic boys lacrosse >> Holmes and Murdick combined to score seven of MC’s goals in a 9-3 victory against Redwood in the MCAL championship game on Saturday. Holmes scored a game-high four goals and Murdick added three. The duo was particularly effective in the second quarter as they combined to score four times to give the Wildcats a 6-2 advantage.
Gianna Renaldi, Elsa Greene, and Brooke Spagnuolo, Marin Catholic girls lacrosse >> While the Wildcats had different players step up offensively across their three playoff games, goalie Renaldi was a constant. Renaldi had eight saves in the first round against Terra Linda, 11 in the semis against Tam, then nine more in the final victory against Redwood. MC defeated Redwood on the strength of three goals and six draw controls from Greene, plus three goals, two assists, and three draw controls by Spagnuolo. Honorable mention to Libby Irving (three goals, two assists in the semi) and Marlee Nies (three goals, three assists in the first round).
Steph Zola and Reese Goodenough, Marin Academy girls lacrosse >> The Wildcats capped an undefeated league campaign by claiming the BCL West championship with a 16-8 win against University last week. Zola had team highs for MA with five goals and 10 draw controls against the Red Devils while Goodenough ranked a close second in both categories with four goals and nine draw controls.
Matt McKane and Fineas DeGooyer, Marin Academy boys lacrosse >> McKane was strong in front of the net making 10 saves against Lick-Wilmerding to help lead MA to an 8-4 victory in the BCL West title game against Lick-Wilmerding. DeGooyer paced the Wildcats with three goals.
Will Mulliken and Devin Singh, Archie Williams boys track >> Mulliken won the 1,600 in 4:18.93 and finished second in the 3,200 (9:44.47) to help lead the Peregrine Falcons to a pair of wins against previously unbeaten Tam and Redwood on Tuesday. Singh finished second in both sprints with personal records in the 100 (11.40) and the 200 (22.81).
Antonio Bayon, Redwood boys track >> Bayon put up a pair of personal bests en route to winning three events and placing second in a fourth. Bayon’s PRs came in the 110 hurdles (14.96) and the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches). He also won the long jump (20’11.5’) and was second in the pole vault (15’0’).
Julia Bayon and Annalise Horn, Redwood girls track >> The Giants capped an unbeaten league season with victories against Archie Williams and Tam on Tuesday. Bayon took first place in both sprints (12.36 in the 100, 25.89 in the 200) and helped Redwood win the 4×100 relay. Horn picked up wins in the long jump (16’2.25’) and the triple jump (34’11.5’).
Ani Stieg, Archie Williams girls track >> Stieg dominated the distance events, winning the 800 (2:22.67), the 1,600 (4:53.20), and the 3,200 (11:00.05). Stieg registered PRs in the 1,600 and the 3,200, including breaking her own school record in the 1,600.
Stella Belluomini, Redwood softball >> Belluomini pitched all 14 innings last week, stringing together back-to-back no-hitters in a 1-0 victory against San Marin and a 5-0 victory against Novato. Belluomini struck out 12 hitters against San Marin and struck out nine more against Novato. Belluomini also had a perfect game against Archie Williams earlier in the season.
