USC is adding a vaguely familiar face to its coaching staff, as Kliff Kingsbury will join the Trojans as an offensive analyst, according to multiple reports.

Kingsbury, 43, spent the past four years as head coach for the Arizona Cardinals after a six-year tenure as head coach at his alma mater, Texas Tech.

Between those two tenures, Kingsbury spent a little more than a month at USC. After being fired by Texas Tech following the 2018 season, Kingsbury was hired by Clay Helton to be the Trojans’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. But 34 days later, he agreed to become the Cardinals’ head coach and was replaced by Graham Harrell at USC.

Kingsbury’s results as a head coach have been mixed. He made the postseason once with Arizona but went 28-37-1 in his four seasons in the NFL and finished with a 35-40 record at Texas Tech.

But despite the middling record as a head coach, no one can deny Kingsbury’s resume as a quarterbacks coach. He’s worked with the likes of Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield at Texas Tech, Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M and Case Keenum at Houston. In Arizona, he helped Kyler Murray earn NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2019 and two Pro Bowl appearances.

Back at USC — a move first reported by NFL Network — Kingsbury will work with quarterbacks again, adding another perspective for Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams to lean on. Both Kingsbury and USC head coach Lincoln Riley are part of the Mike Leach branch of the Air Raid tree.

Kingsbury and Riley were teammates at Texas Tech for a season before Kingsbury went to the NFL draft and Riley began his coaching career for the Red Raiders.
