TAUNTON >> New year. New field. Same results.
In the inaugural contest at the newly renovated Jack Tripp Stadium, Taunton christened the field with not only a victory, but also a no-hitter thrown by senior captain Catherine Larson against Hockomock Kelley-Rex opponent King Philip on Wednesday night to come away with the 4-0 win.
This comes after defeating KP in the Div. 1 state title 5-0 a season ago.
“I feel like it’s been a tough season with no home base — not having a home field,” said Tigers coach Melissa Raposo about the first time her team has stepped onto the new field. “The girls have dealt with a lot of adversity. A lot of last-minute changes, going from this field to that field. … It’s been all over the place. So, for them to come out here playing on this field and not actually practicing on it, they did a great job.”
Larson pitched most of the contest without any traffic on the basepaths and worked out of a jam in the fifth after two runners got on via errors to then strike out the side.
“I knew KP was a really good team, so the most important thing today was hitting my spots and spin,” said Larson. “So, I really just focused on that in order to offset the batters.”
The senior captain struck out 13 batters for Taunton (10-0) and also drove in a run in the bottom of the third to push the lead out to 4-0.
“What’s great about (Larson) is she works the inside, the outside and she doesn’t get flustered,” Raposo said about the ace. “She just goes in. If she doesn’t get a call, she’ll adjust her pitch. She’ll adjust where her location is and she’ll just go back in and attack and rely on her defense to help her.”
Junior captain McCoy Walsh also pitched well with eight strikeouts for King Philip (10-1).
The Tigers got on the board just three batters into the bottom of the first as sophomore Bella Bourque hit an RBI double to center to score junior Victoria Corrao from first after she reached on a walk.
Next up, sophomore Aniyah Bailey cranked the first homer to dead center for a two-run shot to make it 3-0 after one.
“I need runs every inning. That’s our goal and they got them in the first inning which was great,” said Raposo about coming out early and getting some runs. “They were ready. They were pumped. They were fighting over who was going to get the first hit and who was going to get the first home run. I’m just happy to see that they both happened in that first inning.”
That was more than enough for Larson to settle in as she retired the side in order three of the final six frames.
