Police have arrested a suspect on suspicion of fatally stabbing a 43-year-old transient outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Santa Ana, authorities said.

Officers responded to reports of a stabbing around 3 p.m. Sunday and found the victim unresponsive with a stab wound to his upper torso in the parking lot of the McDonald’s at 3810 S. Bristol St.

Noah William Ewing was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Officers learned that a woman had also been assaulted by a man in the same shopping center, reporting she had been punched multiple times in an unprovoked attack, police said.

Officers detained the suspect near that crime scene.

“The investigation revealed that the suspect involved in the assault also approached and stabbed the homicide victim,” police said in a statement. “The two victims were unrelated.”

The suspect, Justin Anthony Carlin, 43, was arrested on suspicion of murder and additional charges related to the assault, police said.

Santa Ana police asked that witnesses call them at 714-245-8390 or anonymously call Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-847-6227.
