The Branson School advanced to the NCS D-II girls tennis championship, getting a decisive win from Katie Warrin at No. 2 singles to win the title with a 4-3 victory against top seed University on Saturday at Golden Gate Park.

Warrin rallied for a 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-3 win against Anna Bhusri to secure the championship.

The Bulls won on the strength of their singles ladder, sweeping all four matches with the other victories coming courtesy of Mirabel Arlander (No. 1), Audrey Gilmor (No. 3), and Paloma Vano-Rice (No. 4).

The Bulls claimed their first section title since winning in 2021. Gilmor, then a freshman, won at No. 3 singles that day to help the Bulls to a 5-2 win over Acalanes.

Branson advanced to Saturday’s final thanks to a 4-3 victory against Lick-Wilmerding earlier in the day. The Bulls got wins from Warrin and Vano-Rice at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively. The teams of Siena Yang/Xandra Sebastian and Olivia Shekou/Kaylee Giang secured the other wins.

• Jennie Liu and Julia Laury picked up singles wins on Saturday to put Redwood into the NCS D-I final and guarantee the Giants a spot in next week’s NorCal playoffs.“They were such good matches,” Redwood coach Tracey Porter said. “Julia Laury’s match lasted almost three hours and it was just two sets.” The No. 3 Giants took down No. 7 Monte Vista 4-3 in the semifinals at James Logan High in Union City then fell 4-3 to Dublin in the championship. Redwood’s doubles teams of Jordan Marotto/Ella Povio and Alessia Bailliet/Gwenn Ricordel picked up wins in both matches.

• Marin Academy got wins from Amelia Thomas and Ann McDermott at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, in a 4-3 NCS D-II semifinal loss to University on Saturday at Golden Gate Park. MA’s other win came at No. 1 doubles, courtesy of Alice Elegant and Jane McDermott.

College football

Former Marin Catholic standout Spencer Petras threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns as Utah State rolled to a 55-10 win against Hawaii on Saturday.

Petras connected on 20 of his 30 pass attempts and was intercepted twice. Both of Petras’ touchdowns came in the first quarter as the Aggies took a 17-0 lead.

College soccer

Former Tam High standout Yuna McCormack scored a goal to help lift No. 4 seed Virginia to a 2-1 victory over Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

McCormack’s goal, her second of the season, tied the game at 1-1 in the 14th minute. Virginia netted the winner when Maggie Cagle scored in the 48th minute. Virginia moves on to face No. 5 seed Wisconsin in the second round.

• Former Redwood High standout Mia Hamant came in off the bench in overtime and played in goal during the penalty shootout as Washington advanced to the second round 3-1 on penalties following a 0-0 tie against Utah State in regulation. Hamant, who saved three penalties in the Big Ten semifinals against Iowa, didn’t have to do quite so much this time as Utah State sent its final three penalties sailing over the crossbar. Washington faces No. 1 seed Mississippi State in the second round.
