Diane “Tutu” Detter passed away peace- fully in her home sur- rounded by loved ones on her 80th birthday, March 20, 2025. Born to the late Marion and John Peltier in 1945, her legacy of being the life of the party began at a young age. She was frequently seen doing cartwheels in her church dress on Sundays, simultaneously entertaining her siblings and mortifying her mother. After graduating highschool, Diane called home from one of the many girls trips in her lifetime only to find a strange man answering the phone–the love of her life, Larry Detter. Diane and Larry were married on June 18, 1966 and quickly got to work building their life together with their two children, Debbie and Eric, and a growing menagerie of adored pets. Diane put in the work to build communities up around her wherever she went. From the Cabrini Guild in Southfield to the Finer Diners in Hartland, Diane was always ready to plan a trip, party, dinner, game night, movie night, wine tasting, trivia, fundraising event, treasure hunt, talent show, choreographed dance, or even a murder mystery role-playing party on zoom. It was impossible to catch her unprepared to entertain, with a basement full of china, a garage full of folding chairs, and a repertoire full of perfectly harmonized duets with her hubby. In 1996, with the birth of her first granddaughter, Diane officially became a Tutu. Her Magic Bags™, (which would magically fill themselves with all sorts of goodies if you were lucky) became a family staple. Tutu was a very proud grandma, and she loved to attend her grandkids’ dance recitals, archery tournaments, pole vaulting events, and plays. She was a professional Android user and sent many long green messages to her grandkids, which (with her love of voice-to-text) required some deciphering but al- ways ended in “love Tutu.”Throughout her 13 year battle with ovarian cancer, Tutu never let her diagnosis slow her down. She went on Safaris in South Africa, swam with dolphins in Hawaii, tasted wine in France and ale in England. At home, she set up a gnome garden treasure hunt in the woods for the neighborhood kids, and sped through the streets of Parshallville in her beloved golf cart. Tutu will always be remembered for her fighting spirit, her infectious laugh, and her invaluable service to all of her many communities. Unfortunately, she will not be remembered by any of her granddaughters wearing her wedding dress, since she decided to “just pitch the old thing” after two generations of use. Diane is survived by her hubby of 59 years, Larry, and her sassy shih tzu mix, Buttons. She leaves behind a long legacy of embracing life and always finding a reason to celebrate, which will be carried on by her daughter Debbie (Andrew) Roberts, her son Eric (Jamie) Detter, her grandkids Mc- Kenna and Katherine Roberts and Brady and Riley Detter. She is also survived by her siblings Duane (the late Dolores) Peltier, Doris (Arlen) Hughes, and Dennis (Nancy) Peltier, and many wonderful nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Donald (the late Phyllis) Peltier. There will be a visitation for Diane on Sunday, March 23, 2025, from 1:00-8:000-8:00 p.m. at Keehn-Griffin Funeral Home, 706 W. Main Street Brighton. Her Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 2201 South Old US Highway 23, Brighton.
