SANTA CRUZ >> City officials announced Wednesday morning that the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf will be shuttered at 8 p.m. Wednesday and will reopen Friday morning due to a water main break underneath the centenarian structure.

“We understand the impact closures can have on Wharf businesses and the community. City staff from Parks and Recreation, the Water Department, and contractors are working around the clock to make the repairs and reopen in time for the weekend foot traffic,” said Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Director Tony Elliot in a statement. “We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding during this essential infrastructure work.”

The statement from the city added that water main breaks are an unfortunate but normal occurrence.

“As with any structure exposed to the elements and constant use, routine wear and tear can lead to occasional disruptions and the need for timely repairs,” read the release. “The city is committed to keeping the Wharf safe, functional, and reliable for the many businesses, visitors and community members who depend on it.”
