OAKLAND >> An Oakland Housing Authority police officer and a man were wounded early Monday after gunfire broke out at an East Oakland apartment complex, police said.

Both the officer and the suspect were in stable condition at a hospital following the gunfire, according to Oakland police who are investigating the shooting.

The gunshots happened in the 900 block of 85th Avenue after Housing Authority officers made a vehicle enforcement stop of the man at the public housing complex about 12:52 a.m.

Authorities said the man, who was riding a motorized scooter, did not live at the complex.

Police have not yet said what the man was stopped for but did say he fired first.

The suspect’s gunfire injured the female officer, while the suspect then was hit by gunfire from another officer who was not wounded, police said.

Two guns that police said belonged to the suspect, including an assault rifle, were found at the scene.
