Jordan Spieth ended his season Sunday after one FedEx Cup playoff event and already was planning for surgery on his left wrist that has troubled him the last 16 months.

“I’ve got to have it operated on ASAP, and then I’ll go through the process of what I’m supposed to do from there,” Spieth said after finishing with a double bogey — vintage Spieth, he made a 30-foot putt to keep it from being worse — and a 74.

At issue is a torn sheath in his left wrist that holds the tendon in place. It first occurred a week before the 2023 PGA Championship, and Spieth has tried various treatments to avoid surgery. But it never got any better, and he could never predict how badly it was going to affect him.

Spieth said he’s talked to several people and the recovery is roughly three months, with physical therapy starting after the sixth week. He did not come close to finishing among the top 50 in the FedEx Cup to advance, so he has time on his side.

“If I don’t have a reason to try to rush back — which I don’t — I’ll probably just take it as slow as I can,” he said.

Coughlin wins Women’s Scottish Open and locks up spot on Solheim Cup >> Lauren Coughlin pulled away with superb putting and closed with a 3-under 69 to win the Women’s Scottish Open, her second LPGA title this summer, to secure a spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup team.

Coughlin, who won the CPKC Women’s Open in Canada three weeks ago, recovered from a pair of early bogeys to move ahead of Megan Khang on the front nine and Esther Henseleit of Germany on the back nine at Dundonald Links.

Coughlin finished at 15-under 273, four shots ahead of Henseleit (70).

Browns still plan to play QB Watson in preseason finale >> Deshaun Watson’s preseason debut remains on schedule. It’s still not known who will be blocking for the Browns quarterback.

Three more offensive tackles got hurt during Cleveland’s exhibition loss to Minnesota on Saturday, further depleting the vital position as the Browns wait for starters Jedrick Wills Jr. and Jack Conklin to return from season-ending injuries.

Watson is set to play this week in Seattle in Cleveland’s exhibition finale, his first game action since breaking his right shoulder in November.

Stafford has hamstring tightness >> Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay thinks quarterback Matthew Stafford should be ready to play in the team’s season opener at Detroit.

Stafford departed a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday because of hamstring tightness. It’s unclear how much he will be able to practice this week, but McVay has no concerns about Stafford’s availability for the Sept. 8 opener against the Lions.

The striker marked his 100th appearance for the club by netting the first goal in a 2-0 win at Chelsea as City began its campaign for a fifth straight Premier League title.

It also took his tally to five goals in three league openers since joining City in 2022 and showed that the Norwegian is fully rested after a summer without international soccer.
