An investigation is underway after a large fight that broke out Saturday near the Bay-Rama Fishfly Festival in New Baltimore resulted in at least one person being hospitalized, according to police.

The New Baltimore Police Department said the incident centered on a fight that was planned to occur at the Walter & Mary Burke Park along Anchor Bay. Investigators said the proposed battle was to take place between students from two different high schools.

Authorities said the potential combatants were initially deferred by officers in the downtown area.

“Unfortunately the juveniles moved to the corner for Green Street and Washington Street. Multiple juveniles fighting were detained and identified with one headed to a local hospital with injuries,” police said in a news release.

The violence was part of a pre-planned, isolated incident with no additional threat to the general public, officers said in the release.

According to social media commentators, the fight was between students from Anchor Bay High School and Dakota High School in Macomb Township.

Officers are continuing to investigate and anyone with additional information can contact the department at 586-725-2181.

Bay-Rama Fishfly Festival is a five-day event attended by over 80,000 people in downtown New Baltimore, according to the celebration’s website.

Fights continue to take place at festivals and other events in and around the tri-county area.

Authorities shut down a spring carnival early in Sterling Heights in May due to numerous fights that broke out in the crowd. Police said the Sterling Place Plaza Spring Fair on Van Dyke Avenue north of 16 Mile Road had pockets of violence break out, so organizers decided to close for the night.
