BURLINGTON >> Scarlett Mirak and the top-seeded Concord-Carlisle girls lacrosse team had their minds made just 25 seconds into Tuesday’s Division 1 seminal matchup with No. 4 Chelmsford.
Mirak’s first of six goals in the Patriots’ 13-6 win at Burlington High provided Concord-Carlisle with the swagger and confidence to oust the Lions and advance to the state championship.
“I think that goal kind of got us hype,” Mirak said. “We knew right then and there that we were going to win.”
The Patriots established a 10-4 cushion at halftime, but a Chelmsford team trademarked with resilience proved to slow a Concord-Carlisle offense that had netted 52 goals through three state tournament wins in the second half.
But Karleigh Mutch supplemented Mirak’s performance with four goals to spearhead a talented Patriots squad over a battle-tested Chelmsford group.
“They’re a great team,” said Concord-Carlisle head coach Erin Cash of the Lions. “They’re here for a reason. They’ve had a great season, and they’re very scrappy. They’re a talented group of kids, so you have to work hard when you’re in games like this.”
The Lions end their season with a 18-5 mark after overcoming a 4-0 halftime deficit in a thrilling 8-6 round of 8 victory over North Andover. Chelmsford ultimately couldn’t pull the same strings on Tuesday to formulate a comeback, as the Patriots (22-2) advance to the finals to play the winner of No. 2 Wellesley (19-4) and No. 6 Westford Academy (18-3) on Thursday at Babson College (7:15 p.m.) after being eliminated in the Final Four a year ago.
“We left it all on the field, and that’s all I can ask of our girls … they’re a great team, and it was a phenomenal game. Our girls did everything they could do,” said Chelmsford head coach Ashley Rokas.
Concord-Carlisle proved its mettle as the top seed in the first quarter, landing seven shots for five goals on Chelmsford netminder Eloise Sosnowski to take a 5-2 lead.
Mirak netted a trio of goals in the frame to push the Concord-Carlisle offense, finding success rolling along the crease and finishing in tight quarters. After Novak opened the scoring just 25 seconds into action, Mutch found twine just over a minute later to double the Patriots’ cushion to 2-0.
Chelmsford’s Caroline Pitts put the Lions on the scoreboard at the 9:21 mark, but the tally ensued a three-goal salvo from the Patriots that resulted in a goal by Teagan Morrissey and two scores off the stick of Mirak.
Jillian Martin broke the rally with 31 seconds left in the quarter to slice Chelmsford’s deficit to three. The Merrimack College-bound Martin is one of five seniors the Lions will surely miss.
“She’s super competitive, and it’s going to be tough to lose all five of them,” Rokas said. “They all have a crucial role on our team.”
And after the Patriots tacked on three more goals to their growing lead to begin the second quarter — a run sparked by a goal from Sarah Fortier at the 10:46 mark and ended by a pair of goals from Mutch — the Lions pushed back.
Chelmsford controlled possession for the majority of the frame and cashed in a pair of opportunities from Catherine Craig and Madelyn Callahan to trim the Concord-Carlisle lead to 8-4. However, two goals from Mirak provided the Patriots with a commanding 10-4 lead at halftime. Each team totaled four shots on goal in the second, but Concord-Carlisle’s Alex Hooven stood tall.
Both teams netted two goals each in an evenly matched third quarter to protect Concord-Carlisle’s six-goal lead ahead of the final stanza. After Mirak scored 1:10 into the period, Carly Hartman and Callahan found the back of the net to apply another wave of pressure, but Mutch scored with 37 seconds left to place the Patriots 12 minutes from the title game.
Chelmsford stymied the Patriots from recording a shot on goal until the 4:25 mark of the fourth — a goal by Morrissey — but couldn’t find the scoreboard to throw a final scare at Concord-Carlisle.
“It acknowledges all of their hard work. They all work so hard. The same way they play, they practice,” Cash said.
