Wayzata achieved perfection and history all in one match Saturday, sweeping New Prague 25-20, 25-23, 26-24 in the Class 4A state championship match to win its fourth straight state title.

The victory was Wayzata’s 44th straight dating back to last season and capped a perfect 34-0 campaign.

New Prague led the third set 24-23, but Olivia Swenson delivered back-to-back kills to bring Wayzata to championship point, and the title was clinched by a New Prague attack error.

Swenson paced Wayzata with 14 kills, while Katie Kelzenberg added 10 more. They were consistently set up by the state’s top setter, Stella Swenson.

New Prague’s runner-up finish came in its first season in Class 4A after moving up from Class 3A in the offseason. Avery Klein had 10 kills for New Prague (27-5).

New Prague certainly battled Wayzata. Even the second set was tied 23-23, but Wayzata found a way to make the key plays at the key times. And, at the end of the day, it was another sweep for Wayzata, which didn’t drop a set throughout its postseason run.

In fact, Wayzata dropped just three sets all season, with the last set loss coming in late September against Champlin Park. Wayzata won its final 46 sets of the season.

Class A

This week marked Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s first trip to the state volleyball tournament. Its souvenir will be a state championship trophy.

The top-seeded Knights downed Mayer Lutheran in four sets, 25-13, 32-30, 17-25, 25-22 in the Class A final Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.

Abigail Carr led the way with 21 kills.

The title was largely won in the second set, which the Knights trailed 23-18, but rallied to win seven of the next 9 points to knot the set at 25-25. Things went back and forth from there, until Dylan Werkman delivered the winning kill to put the Knights (30-6) up two sets to zero.

Mayer Lutheran finished the year 28-7.

New Life Academy beat Mabel-Canton in five sets to claim third place. Makenna Lilly paced the Eagles with 22 kills in that match.

Class 2A

Pequot Lakes swept Rush City in convincing fashion, winning its first state title via a 25-18, 25-22, 25-22 final. The Patriots’ state title comes one year after it dropped the state final to Cannon Falls last fall.

Ella Kratochvil paced the Patriots with 20 kills, including the championship-clincher in the third set — one that was tied 22-22 before Pequot Lakes (29-5) won the final three points.

Lydia Bengston tallied 15 kills for Rush City (30-3).

Class 3A

Marshall won its third straight Class 3A title, downing Delano 25-22, 25-13, 25-19. All three of those championship match victories have come via sweep.

All five losses for Marshall (30-5) this fall came to Class 4A powers Lakeville South and Champlin Park.

Brielle Riess led Marshall on Saturday with 18 kills.

Delano (29-3) made its third state title game appearance since 2009. The program is still seeking its first state championship.
